Nativity! One Shot

It wasn't uncommon for people to pass out in the maternity ward, many partners and family members had joined their loved one to support them through their labour and ended up collapsing or blacking out from shock, panic or fear. You were used to being called down to help and having to help bring them back around, but this was odd even for you.

With some help, you had been able to get the man into a bed and it was just a matter of time until he'd wake up, so you performed the routine tests to make sure it wasn't anything serious that caused the fainting spell. As you were reading over the results, you noticed the man waking up again.

"Good morning, Mr Maddens," you smiled down at him.

"What happened?" He croaked.

"Well I hoped you could tell me that. I've never had two men bring twenty-four children into a birthing suite before and according to the woman in labour, she had no idea who any of you were," you explained.

A look of guilt and uncomfortableness washed over him as he tried to sit up in the hospital bed, realising he was connected to several different machines.

"I'm a teacher," he stated. "I don't know why I listened to my colleague to bring them all here. He thought it'd be smart to show the children about childbirth to help them act convincingly in the nativity play. I knew it was stupid, but he was going to bring them here whether I joined him or not."

You couldn't help but laugh. It was the first time you had heard anything of the sort, but it certainly cleared it all up a little.

"Well it sounds like you're a good teacher and rather devoted to your class, even if a little fainthearted," you smiled. "I'm guessing that was the first birth that you have witnessed?"

He nodded his head. "I don't know what I expected but somehow it was worse."

There was no denying that. Even if you were more than capable in assisting in a birth, you had seen many people pass out or be sick or need to leave the room because they were not ready to see someone give birth.

"You get used to it. I have a couple more tests to do then you should be free to go. Can I just get your first name as your colleague could only tell me your surname?"

"Paul. Paul Maddens."
