Omoi's right. I should exercise more. If I did, then I wouldn't have such a difficult time trying to get through this never-ending flight of stairs. Taking deep breaths, I wipe away beads of sweat from my forehead and grasp on the smooth metal railing -- heavily dragging one foot in front of the other. My limbs feel numbingly tense from climbing.

Last I checked, Captain Yamato said that there were only 268 steps. But going through it now. Why does it feel like there's more?

A gust of wind gently blows against my face but provides me no comfort since the unforgiving heat of the midday sun gleams upon us. Chijo is a few flights of steps ahead. The man seems adept at climbing steep steps; he does it so quickly. Still, every now and then, he lets out a painful wheezy cough, like he's some unfortunate cat trying to cough out a huge hairball. He's obviously worse for wear. And I don't blame him. I'm not feeling too good myself.

I swear if I get through this, I'll add some form of stair exercise in my routine instead of relying purely on swimming and running for my cardio. As much as I hate working out that way, I'll-

Oof.

A hunchbacked man in a dark tunic tries to quickly climb the steps and brusquely bumps against me. But a firm, strong hand grasps on my shoulder and steadies my footing.

Sasuke.

"Tch." I hear Sasuke clicking his tongue. He's so close to me now that I catch a whiff of the calming scent of sandalwood.

"Thanks," I say. He lets go of me and gives me a sharp look. The corners of his lips curl into a grimace.

Why is he looking at me like that?

"What?" I stop and ask. A group of raucous teenagers wearing light-colored yukatas overtake us. Sasuke pulls me to the side so we don't block the people behind us who are also making their ascent to the temple.
