I told Naruto that he didn't have to, but he still insisted on carrying my shopping bags after we left the restaurant. With a wide grin on his face, he thanked me for the meal and told me a few entertaining jokes as we walked through the winding streets of the village. With how he was acting, one would think Naruto was in good spirits. But every now and then, I caught him staring into the distance with a troubled look on his face. Those moments were brief, but they betrayed Naruto's real mood. Looking back, it makes me realize that Naruto's the kind of man who forces a smile on his face to make people worry less about him.

Still, I wonder what's brought about this shift in his behavior. We were having fun at the restaurant a while ago, weren't we? Conversations were mostly light and playful. He seemed to like the food as well. Was there something I said to offend him? Hmm.

At this very moment, the late afternoon sun shines high above us. Beads of sweat roll down from my forehead. This ghastly temperature... it's so unlike the mild climate in Kumogakure where it's rarely hot since the whole village is protected by thick clouds. One can faint due to dehydration on this tropical island if one isn't careful. Luckily, we're already at the resort so we don't have to bear this horrid outdoor weather for too long. The enticing floral, plumlike scent of yellowish-pink flowers from lush plumeria trees around the resort smells great though. So it isn't all that bad.

"Next time, the food is on me." Naruto's cheerful voice gets me out of my thoughts. His spiky blonde hair rustles in the wind and he turns to face me. "Have you been to Ramen Ichiraku in Konoha?"

"No. I can't say I have." I shake my head as we pass the stone walkway leading to the rows of bungalow suites. A family -- dressed in garish floral polos -- passes us and eagerly takes pictures by the infinity pool on our opposite side. "Well, to be honest, I haven't even been to Konoha."

"Never? You never passed over Konoha even when you visited Gaara?"

"Not really, I usually take a plane to go to Suna," I explain. "Sometimes, I take the shuttle train. It's more time-efficient and less tiring to do so than traveling by foot."
