• Some parts of this chapter might seem clunky and expositional. The plot needs to be set up so please bear with me. It will all make sense later and in Part 2 of Soulbound.
• Yukata- a Japanese garment, a casual summer kimono usually made of cotton or synthetic fabric, and unlined.
• Tanabata- (means "Evening of the Seventh") is a Japanese festival that celebrates the meeting of star crossed lovers, the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively.)
• Yugakure-is the hidden village of the Land of Hot Water where their ninjas reside. The village's ninjas almost exclusively work within the Land of Hot Water's borders, keeping roads safe for tourists and performing odd-jobs for many small settlements around the country.
• Jashinist- A name for people who worship the god, Jashin. Jashin demands nothing less than utter death and destruction from his followers. Jashinists believe that killing people is a public service since it liberates them from the fear of death.

The price for peace is submission. At least, that's what Grandma Ai told me and Sasuke after she reached inside her pockets and paid the two Jashinists off. She said caving in is a better option than ending up with a burnt down cottage. Those who opposed Jashinists have failed and died which is why people choose to give in than fight. That's how it's always been.
Jashinists leave you alone if you pay their revolutionary fee every month. They prefer to sacrifice travelers and young women most times which was why Grandma Ai told the Jashinists that Sasuke and I are her grandchildren. She assured us that Sasuke and I were safe to travel because of it.
But still, that fact does not sit well with me at all. She shouldn't have to live like that... no one ever should. Is peace really worth not dealing with these lowlifes who terrorize their own people? Or is it merely escapism disguised as peace in order for them to avoid the difficult issue of determining whether the pursuit of peace is worth the cost of being oppressed all your life?
