I always wondered why Noa didn't let us stay in the cottage. But now that I'm here, I can understand why she told us to spend the night in the barn. I'm not saying that this cottage is worse than that godawful barn. No, it's nowhere near as horrible. But still, the state of this cottage is quite deplorable. I remember saying that their living space is a bit cramped before; but now, this part of the cottage is the equivalent of living in a tuna can.

The old books that were once tidily stacked against the walls are now scattered all over, laid open, and placed on the sofa couch and the bottom bunk of the bed. Trinkets and knickknacks from large wooden boxes spill over to the floor making it even more difficult to walk around. The table in the dining area -- where Grandma Ai is sitting now-- is also filled with musty books that have yellowed and gathered dust. The air in the room is the kind that's heavy on the lungs. It seems like the musty smell of the books is fighting against the sulfurous scent of the medicines for dominance. On her side, on top of one of the stacks of old books on the table, there's a plate of leftover pork buns from the other day.

"Please take a seat. Both of you," Grandma Ai says as she closes a thick book with a broken spine. The book's pages are so brittle and delicate. It looks like it can break and turn into dust at any time. Sasuke and I sit on the opposite side of the table while Noa takes her place beside her sister. Grandma Ai seems to be better now than the last time I saw her. Aside from the bandages on her head, one could hardly tell she's been injured just the day before.

"Buns?" Grandma Ai places the plate of pork buns in front of us. Sasuke shakes his head in response.

"No, thanks. I'm good." I also reply to Grandma Ai. I'm usually not one to pass off on breakfast. It's also bad manners in Kumo to refuse food that's given to you by a host. But still, I can't worry about that now. I want to get out of here without any more delays and continue my journey. And the sooner that happens, the better.

"You two must have many questions as to what happened last night." Noa sighs as she crosses her arms. "Those monsters. Those marks on your wrists. They're not supposed to possible. I'm sorry that it happened to both of you."
