I left because I had to. It was not my place to stay. Yuka had to take care of her sobbing stepson. It would have been strange to just sit there, watch her comfort Uta, and hear her promise the boy things that I knew were never going to come true. Riki Maeda is not coming back. He's dead.

With a heavy heart, I grasped the white metal handrails of the staircase and climbed the stairs intending to rejoin my group. But by the time that I reached Deck 5 and heard the blaring, jovial music coming from the Function Room at the stern of the ship, I realized that I wasn't in the mood to socialize. So I decided to climb further -- up to Deck 6 -- to get some fresh air and shake off the gloom out of my system before I go back down to meet everyone else.
