"Let's go," Karl smiled.

"Go where?" I asked.

"We're going to get a Christmas tree," Karl cheered.

"Wait, really?" I pout slightly.

"Yeah! It's Christmas time, we have to have a Christmas tree," Karl explained like it was obvious.

"I haven't had a Christmas tree since before my mom died," I mumbled quietly.

Karl gave me that soft look, not expecting for me to say something like that clearly. It was true though. The last time we had a Christmas tree was the year before my mom died. After that, we didn't really have the time or the money for things like Christmas. While my mom was in the hospital, we hung Christmas lights around the window, but that was as close as we got to celebrating.

"Beautiful, I want to make this the best Christmas possible for you," Karl looked at my sadly, "it's time to make up for all the years that you didn't get the holidays you deserved."

We spent over an hour walking through the tree lot, looking for the perfect Christmas tree to put in our home. Once we found it, Karl dragged it back to his car, insisting that he could get it there himself.

We got home and spent the rest of the late November night listening to Christmas music, drinking hot chocolate, and decorating my first Christmas tree in almost ten years. Our first Christmas together. The first of many.
