Chapter 15- Cal

After that talk with Indie, I go back to me & Nora's room to think things over. I was really hoping that we wouldn't have to move away, even know I know that is irrational. This was the only place we've ever known &... leaving it behind will be scary... even if it's to a better place where we can truly be ourselves...

But at the same time... I'm kinda excited to get away from this small town... Having to fake being human around others all my life has made it hard to make friends... Not to mention being able to openly express my love for Nora will be great... I just hope... whatever we end up deciding... works out...

Nora arrives not too long after, after her Chieftess lessons, with Amery trailing behind. Their parents are making dinner, so our meeting goes unnoticed for now, for that I am grateful. I relay to them everything Indie told me, not sparing a single detail. They stare back at me afterward, deep in thought.

"So... what do you think?" I ask tentatively, eyes falling on Nora's. She smiles slightly, though seeming a bit nervous about the overwhelming situation we're facing.

"I... wow... this might take some time to try to figure out, but... I think that the forest might be better? Just because... I don't know how well we'd fare underwater... & it might be easier to escape & make friends via the forest..."

I nod thoughtfully. "Yeah, I definitely agree... If it comes down to it, I'd do whichever just to be with you-" We both blush at the sentence & I clear my throat nervously. Amery smiles sweetly at us, eyes drifting between us. "But I'd prefer the forest..."

"Ok..." She smiles brightly. "Forest it is... Now we just have to figure out how to get there... how to escape successfully without Mom & Dad knowing or being able to get us... Amery, are you coming with us? It... we'd truly miss you if you didn't..."

He shakes his head slowly, frowning sadly. "Mmm, no... I don't think I will... Just because... I know Mom & Dad are the worst, but... think of the town... The town needs someone to be the leader, & if you don't want to be it- which, I'm ok with, you do whatever you feel is the best, but- the town's gonna need someone, &... it's best to be someone who could... make things better for everyone, even if the progress might be slow..."

We both smile bittersweetly. "Yeah, that makes sense..."

"I'll still help you guys, I just... think that I could make a positive change here if I really try..."

Nora clears her throat, seeming kinda sad, but smiling all the same. "Ok... We're... gonna really miss you, but... whatever you feel is best... Maybe we could send letters to each other, or something..."

He smiles brightly. "Yeah!... We might want to wait a little until things settle down, but yeah..."

I nod slowly. "Ok, then... we got somewhat of a plan... I can figure out the details for sure with Indie next lesson, & we can proceed from there... Try to keep everything inconspicuous until then, & we should be fine..."

"Ok..." Nora smiles, mixed emotions showing on her face. "Meeting adjourned, I guess, haha..."

What did you guys think of this chapter? I know you probs wanted for Amery to come too, but the town really needs someone to stay behind & make things better for generations to come. Which is really brave honestly. I would've just run away to live in the forest & never go back, but it's important that everyone feel safe, so it's good that Amery wants to bring change.
