I take the microphone, turning to the crowd. "How's everyone doing today?" [Cheer] "It's so great to have such a warm welcome. I... won't say much but... I just wanted to say thank you for being so nice &... welcoming me & my girlfriend Nora..." [Silence for a moment, then a deafening cheer & waving of Pride flags.] I turn to Nora, eyebrows knit slightly before handing the mic off to Amery. She looks at me, smiling.
"You did great!" She takes my hand, kissing me quickly. "I can't believe everyone's so welcoming..."
I crack a smile. "I know, right? It's so different..." I have barely enough time to think this before Amery clears his throat.
"I... would like to thank everyone for showing up today... It took a lot of planning & effort, & thanks for everyone who participated... It means more to me than you can know how happy I am to see my big sister after so many years... & I'm so glad that we've progressed so far since back then when they left. Cal & Nora left 5 years ago because they were in love & it was looked down upon back then. & as a bisexual man, I'm glad to say that there is no need to run away anymore." [Cheers & Pride flags waving] "Everyone can be themselves..." He turns to us hesitantly. "Including myself..."

Oof, they're all so brave. I know it'd be hard to come out to all those people, tho it definitely does help that they live in a supportive town. Makes me kinda wonder what my future will be like, being NB & wanting to be a teacher. I mean, do I tell my employers/the students? I could be myself & be a good inspiration for other LGBT kids. Do I stay closeted there but open in my personal life, having to suppress my true identity to avoid discrimination & harassment? These are the questions we ask ourselves daily as LGBT people, not having the privilege to just hope things will be ok, or remain oblivious. Having to constantly be aware of how other people are treating us. If only we all lived in a world like Amery's town.
