Meredith hated the pits. She might be really confused about what kind of surgery she wanted to get into, but she did know she hated working in the pit. She wanted to be a surgeon, she didn't want to be an ER doctor who stitched drunks up. And it was hardly fair as she really had only been a few minutes late. But Bailey had this whole speech about a doctor being a couple minutes late being the difference between life and death, so she probably just had to accept her punishment. Next time, she just couldn't be late because of a stupid boy in her bed. Maybe she had to be mean to the boys or something to get them out faster. She could probably just kick them out at night. It would be a little heartless but it would also mean she wasn't late to work just because some idiot didn't understand that the night before had just been about sex. And the night before had sucked way too much to be worth a day in the pit.

But here she was, and it wasn't even a good day that might lead to something awesome in the OR. It was...dead. Beyond dead, actually. There were a couple of drunks passed out on the beds, but otherwise, Meredith was sitting at the desk, flipping through a magazine. And she just wanted to find something to do. She wasn't going to complain out loud about it, she had been working at a hospital long enough to know how bad that could be but that almost seemed better than just sitting around and doing nothing. She hadn't gone to med school so she could sit and do nothing.

But that's what she was doing and it just made her hate today even more. There was only so many times she could read about the Kardashian sisters without wanting to remove her eyes. Though, really, the Kardashian sisters did make her feel much better about her crappy situation. At least she wasn't one of them. Or well...they were rich but they were basically famous because one of them had made really slutty sex tape and that was bad, that was really bad. She had a feeling none of that family had any idea who they were if a camera wasn't pointed at them. So at least she had a good job that didn't involve a sex tape or marrying a guy for like...three days or whatever. She was actually kind of starting to learn that someone always had it worse. Whenever she was feeling particularly shitty, she just reminded herself that she was in a hospital where people were sick and dying.

Things could be a lot worse. And she liked to think that most of the time, everyone around her was probably just as big of a mess as she was. No one had it all together or anything like that, everyone was just pretending. So at least it was good that she wasn't sick or dying.

Though she might die of boredom if she kept reading this magazine. She groaned and threw it back down on the desk, staring at the ER board. Empty, it was completely empty. She had no idea why the people of Seattle refused to hurt themselves today.

"You're in the pits too?" a voice suddenly came from behind her.

"Lexie?" Meredith turned towards her half sister person. It was a little crazy, finding out she had a half sister after years of being an only child. But when she had met Lexie in med school, it had just...been right or something. They were sisters and it was good. Or, getting good. She really did like Lexie. "Yeah, I'm in the pits."

"Sucks."

"You have no idea."

"I can imagine."

"I was five minutes late."

"Five minutes? Seriously?"

"Maybe ten, maybe."

"Wow."

"Yeah," Meredith sighed. "What are you doing down here?"

"I was the lucky intern today," Lexie frowned.

"What'd you do to piss Bailey off?" Meredith giggled. "Or have you been getting all the awesome cases?"

"I've had a few awesome cases so it was my turn," she shrugged.
