Meredith hated working sometimes. Not all the times because she loved being a surgeon and saving lives but sometimes work just felt like the thing that was keeping away from her boyfriend. It was lame and pathetic but it was true. She hated it. Today, she was torn. She really wanted to be with her boyfriend, having sex or laughing or whatever else they did. But if she had been with her boyfriend, she would have missed out on the most exhilarating surgery of her career so far.
She had spent most of her intern year thinking she had mad a really big mistake becoming a surgeon. It had been hell and she hadn't felt like she was doing anything at all. But today she had saved a life and it was the best feeling in the world.
Derek always said she had saved his life but she hadn't, not really anyway. But today, she had actually done a procedure in the ER that had actually saved a man's life. If it hadn't been for her burr holes, Mr. Berry would be dead right now. It wasn't like it was a complicated procedure, she was actually sure that anyone could do it if they were explained it to but still, it had been such a high. It had been like a little sneak into what her life would be like when the hell that was residency was over.
One day, she was going to be an incredible neurosurgeon who thought burr holes were child's play. But right now, she was on top of the world. And surgery highs meant wanting Derek. She definitely wanted Derek right now. Which sucked because even if she was off work, he was busy. It was good, it was really good that Derek was back at work but it really meant she couldn't even sneak away on her lunch break for a quickie.
So instead, she was going to the caf and wondering just how busy he was. Now that he was driving, Mark had given him control over a small commercial project that seemed to be going well. He was loving being back on site but he was generally able to talk for a bit. So if he wasn't busy right now, it would be a good time to call him and tell him about her day. She'd see him later, they already had talked about going to her place after they were both done work but that seemed like it was going to be ages from now.
"Mer! Mer!"
"What?" she frowned, looking around.
"Over here!" Lexie waved her over.
"Oh hey Lexie," Meredith smiled at her sister.
"You look totally out of it," Cristina laughed.
"Sorry, I was just...amazing morning," Meredith breathed.
"Glad someone had a good morning," Alex rolled his eyes just as Aaron sat down with his own tray.
"What's your problem?" Aaron asked Alex.
"I'm trying to figure out why the hell I went peds."
"Because saving kids is amazing," Lexie shrugged.
"Some kids are shitheads," Alex challenged. "Natural selection."
"Alex, that's horrible," Meredith giggled.
"But true."
"Sadly its not or you wouldn't be here," Cristina smirked.
"She has a point," Meredith grinned.
"I don't know why I put up with you too," Alex groaned.
"No one else likes you," Cristina shrugged. "I don't even like you...but you're not totally worthless."
"Why thanks, Yang," Alex rolled his eyes.
"So much love here," Aaron laughed as he bit into his sandwich.
"And yet you stick around," Lexie smiled.
"It entertains me."
"Glad to be of help," Meredith grinned.
