Chapter 40. A tragedy

My father, Dante, was a self-made billionaire. He started a small steel company in Pennsylvania with the money he had earned by selling used farm equipment. My father's steel company slowly turned into a major corporation. My father was smart and witty. So it could be expected. We had gained associates and client's in every corner of the world thanks to him. My father was my grandfather's late wife's child. My step-grandmother Rosetta never accepted my father. Rosetta kicked my father out of the house after my grandfather died. My father never looked back. He lived in a trailer and worked on farms to make ends meet.

My father met my mother Giana at a bar when he was twenty. He fell head over heels in love with the bubbly girl. My parents married soon after they met. My mother didn't have a problem with living in a trailer with my father. My father bought a small house when my mother got pregnant with me. I had a wonderful childhood. My mother stayed at home with me while my father worked ten hours a day. I never missed my father because my mother was always there for me. Things changed after my father built his company. My mother and I started spending our days with my father at his company to support him. My parents cried when it was time for me to start school.

I met my wife Caterina in high school. She was chubby and wore braces back then. Caterina was the first friend I ever made. She was a kind-hearted person who was always ready to help others. I enjoyed spending time with Caterina. I even volunteered at a nursery to be with her. I was over the moon when Caterina confessed to me. She gained a lot of attention when her appearance changed, but I was the lucky one. My parents loved Caterina as well. They were astonished when they heard that she came from a prominent family. Caterina's parents were well-known actors. Caterina and I got married after finishing college.

I joined my father's corporation after getting settled. Caterina took over her parent's businesses after they chose to retire from show business. Caterina got pregnant right after our second anniversary. She took some time off to concentrate on her health. I supported my wife every step of the way. It was during that time that rumors started surfacing about my father. My step-grandmother was telling everyone that my father had borrowed millions of dollars from her. She claimed that she had the documents to prove it and wanted her money back. My father sued Rosetta for defamation. Rosetta cursed my father when the court ordered her to compensate him. She told my father that he was to blame for her children's misfortunes. All my uncles and aunts were living in poverty because of their laziness. They had never worked a day in their lives. My step-grandmother and her children had been living off the money that my grandfather had left behind. My father offered my aunts and uncles a job at his company. My father's step-siblings never accepted his proposal.

We moved on after the whole debacle. Leonardo was born on a dark and stormy night. I cried when I saw my beautiful baby boy's face. I thanked Caterina for giving me such a wonderful child. My parents and my in-laws didn't leave our side. Caterina was allowed to go home after two days in the hospital. My in-laws organized a party to welcome her and Leonardo home. Leonardo made on the first night clear that he didn't like people doting on him. He cried every time someone came close to him. Raising a child and running businesses proved to be challenging to Caterina and me. Caterina was always tired and couldn't handle the stress. We moved in with my parents to lessen the load. My parents were happy to help. Leonardo quickly became attached to my parents. Caterina was surprised when she found out that her fatigue was due to her second pregnancy.
