Alexei's P.O.V
I was busy going through my emails when I heard a child cry. I had asked Chance to move my office to the second floor of the Marquis headquarters. I wanted to observe the activities that were happening around the building. There was a busy street in front of the company. I always enjoyed watching the hustle and bustle from my office. There were many companies in the neighborhood. It was common to have a lot of traffic at this time of the day.
Watching the traffic always calmed my mind. It had maybe something to do with the fact that I grew up in a lively Paris. The child was crying in such an intense manner that it had caught my attention. I groaned when I realized that I had left my window open. The sound of the crying child had slipped through the window. I stood up to close my window, but a woman then caught my eye. The woman was frantically asking a passerby for help while trying to calm her infant down.
No one paid attention to the woman. Everyone was probably in a hurry to get to work. I was sure that my employees were amongst those impertinent people. The woman was well-dressed and looked well-mannered. I couldn't understand why no one wanted to help her. I could detect from the way she was flailing her arm around that she needed help in changing her baby's diaper. Everyone backed out the moment they realized what the woman wanted.
The woman started sobbing while hugging her crying child. I could see that she felt hopeless because she couldn't help her baby. I was just about to ask my assistant to help her when I saw a man approaching the woman. The man was wearing a dark blue suit, and he was carrying a black briefcase satchel. He asked the woman if she needed assistance. The woman nodded eagerly. She then started explaining to the man what had happened.
The man motioned the woman to stay where she was, then walked away. I huffed when I saw the man returning to the scene with a stack of newspapers. I knew that there was a stand with free newspapers nearby, but I had never visited it. I was suddenly curious about what the man was planning to do with the stack of papers. I chuckled when I saw the man spread a set of newspapers on the sidewalk. The man wrapped his bag in a bunch of publications after that. He then put it on top of the other papers. The woman quickly knelt and placed her baby on the bag. She used the bag as a station to change her baby's diaper. "That was pretty clever of him," I thought to myself while observing the scene. There was probably a reason why the woman didn't want to leave the spot. Everyone looked questioningly at the woman and the man, but no one stopped to help them.
The man cleaned his bag after everything was over then helped the woman feed the baby. The man played with the baby while the woman went to throw the newspapers and the dirty diaper away. A car stopped in front of the woman the moment she returned. The woman quickly took some money out of her bag, then tried to hand it over to the man. The man instantly took a step back with the baby. He refused to take the bills. The woman shook her head, then gave him a business card.
She then took her baby out of the man's arms and stepped into the car. The baby started crying the moment he lost contact with the man. The man leaned into the car, then placed a kiss on the baby's head to calm him down. He waved the woman and the baby goodbye while the car drove away. The man sighed the moment the car was out of sight. He then looked at his watch and straightened his suit jacket. I frowned when I saw the man walking towards the entrance of the Marquis headquarters. I sighed when Chance suddenly walked into my office without knocking.
Chance immediately asked me, "What are you looking so intently at, Alexei?" I closed my window then responded to Chance with, "Nothing, Chance." Chance chuckled then uttered: "Three new people will be joining us today, Alexei. Two of them will join my office while the other one will be joining our marketing department. I think that you will be very pleased to find out who this person is." Chance handed me a file after his statement. I frowned when I read the name "Zachariel Joseph" on the cover of the dossier.
