“Did someone call for a mechanic?”
Abby was stunned, she didn’t know what to say or do. Standing before was almost, just almost the spitting image of Maria. This girl had Maria’s skin colour, her smile and even mannerism, but she was an alpha by her scent; a scent that had an underlying smell similar to Clarke’s, although her daughter was an omega. “Hmmm… weird,” Abby thought to herself. When Raven extended her hands, Abby took it and she felt something but didn’t know what it was. It was like a tug; the best she could identify it was, protectiveness over this young alpha. The moment was interrupted when Ash said, “Hey Rae.” Abby cleared her throat and stepped aside so that Raven could enter the room.
Once inside the room, Raven says to Ash, “You’re the one who called in the work order?”
“We need to talk,” Ash simply says, not answering Raven’s question.
“Mami, this level’s off limits for people like me,” Raven comments looking at Ash attentively. “Mami,” Abby hasn’t heard that in a long time. Her mind goes back 19 years to dark, erotic nights of sweet kisses, gentle caresses and sweet nothings whispered in the dark. Abby turns around and adjusts her pants. “This shouldn’t be happening,” she scolds herself because that simple word always turned her on.
“Yeah Rae I know but it’s important. Umm, here let me introduce Dr. Abigail Griffin,” she says motioning towards Abby. “Abby, this is Raven Reyes, my best friend and mechanic.” Clearing her throat, Abby says, “It’s nice to meet you Raven. I didn’t know you could speak Spanish.”
“Yeah, got it from my mom, but what’s going on? I sense this isn’t to just meet so mami,” Raven says looking at Ash, “¿Que pasa?” [What’s happening?] “Again that word,” Abby mutters to herself. Ash didn’t fully know Spanish but being around Rae and Ms. Mar over the years and seeing their interaction, she knew a couple of words and phrases. Besides, Raven had been teaching her every now and then when they had some spare time.
“Rae, what I’m gonna say is top secret okay. I need you to promise me that you won’t say anything, not even to your mom, please Raven. It’s important,” Ash pleads. Seeing her friend’s concern on her face, Raven just nods and raises her hand in the air. “I Promise,” she says.
“Yesterday, a dropship was sent to the ground with 100 delinquents, minors really under the age of 18 to see if the ground is survivable. The thing is, the monitors that were placed around their wrist are one by one ceasing to work. We have to know why. I believe that they are somehow destroying it so that it can’t send their vitals back to the Ark,” Ash says, observing Raven’s reaction. Rae doesn’t say anything, she’s slowly digesting the information. She knew something was up the minute she saw Ash’s face. “Yeah well it makes sense Ash. If I was there and this was the first time I’ve had freedom from the adults, I’d definitely start taking it off. I’d rather die on the ground than be floated,” Raven says, as she scratches under her chin. “But, why were they sent now? What’s so important that now , was the correct time to send them down and don’t lie to my Ashley. You know I can tell if you do,” Raven says squinting her eyes towards her best friend. Ashley has never been able to lie, at least to her.
“The Ark is dying Raven. We only have a limited time before we all die and if the ground’s survivable then maybe we can start life on the ground like we were always supposed to,” Abby finally says, after seeing the interaction between Raven and Ash. “Ash was right. This girl is very smart,” Abby thinks to herself.
“Mierda, [Shit] we’re all gonna die,” Raven says unbelievably. “Isn’t there anything that can be done to stop it?” she asks, eyes shifting from Ash to Abby. “No, Rae, there isn’t. We tried, believe me we’ve tried but nothing can stop this,” Ash says sadly, remembering her Uncle Jake.
