Chapter Forty Five- Unforgiveable

        Making their way back to the apartment, Jennifer noticed how Colin did not say two words to her. He was not cruel, but was also not communicating with her.

        "What's going on? Did I do something?"

        "No." He said sharply. Almost as if her communication were bugging him in some way.

        "Clearly something is wrong, you have not looked at me since the shooting..."

        "I don't want to talk about it..." He said as he placed the keys on the counter and made his way toward the bedroom.

        "Colin...you want us to be a normal couple...they talk. They don't always have to talk about rainbows and sunshine or how lustful they are for one another, they can talk about real issues...What is going on?"

        "I didn't protect you..."

        "What are you talking about? You pulled me down from being shot..."

        "No...behind the counter. If that would have been him-we both would be..." He froze with the haunting realization. "We wouldn't be standing here..." He found the words and continued.

        "Don't you dare say any of this is your fault! Everything you have done since you found out has been to protect me..." She said quietly-in case he was listening.

        "I can't protect you, that kills me more than anything... You need to be someone who could jump in front of the bullet and not freeze...."

        "I want to be with you Colin. You know that..."

        "But what you want is not what you need..."

        "So this is it? After all we've been through...after I just moved my stuff twenty miles downtown, gave up my reputation and safety-NOW you are going to quit?"

        He did not speak, just stood and looked at her with his eyes filling with tears.

        "I am not supposed to be with you. Fate is trying to tell us that..."

        "Screw fate. Screw the stars or fortune tellers, even karma, screw all of it. I know that you have been the only person in my entire life that has made me feel completely. Adventurous, humorous, and even sexy. You have brought me out of my shell and made me see life is not all cameras and scripts, it can be fun and carefree. When we go back to work, there is no telling how much we will be able to see one another-if at all. Can we please not argue..."

        "I am not arguing Jennifer...I am stating a true fact. Everything I have done has been selfish. Even meeting, I put you in a selfish position...I continuously have to keep this a secret and I took something from you that you should have saved for the one you would marry..."

        "Who says I want that?"

        "You did..."

        "When?"

        "A few days ago...before all this happened....Is it because of him that you are saying goodbye and is he why you are trying to end us?"

        He nodded.

        "It's not safe. I am nothing but an obstacle from your safety."

        "So you would rather me be completely alone to fend for myself than have someone help me..."

        "Maybe we just need time..."

        "If I leave...I'm not coming back." She said as tears built up deeply in her eyes. As he did not stop her, she turned toward the door and began to turn the knob. "Did you mean it when you said you loved me?" Jennifer asked, with the door half open.

        He nodded. "With all that I am..." He spoke leaving her in her thoughts as she exited the apartment.
