Despite Ivy's suggestion to take her car, I insisted that we did the short (but miserable) walk. She complained but still I could tell she was fighting the satisfaction smile that was tugging at her lips. Stubborn, just stubborn. Then again, who was I to complain when Ivy was voluntarily stood next to me at the front of 'medow way' primary school. She was with me when she didn't need to be, and it was an an indescribable sensation.
Soon enough, the doors of the main entrance open and Ella came bounding out. As ever, she was full of energy with her book bag firmly grasped in one hand and a piece of paper in the other. I bent down to her level, leaving ivy stood up straight, and waved my arms to my excited little sister would run on over. And she did.
"Look what I drew in art " she practically yelled
I faked an enthusiastic smile and looked at the slightly cramped paper in her hand. It was a wobbly boat, made with white wax and water paint.
"Oh wow" I smiled at her "that's so cool"
But then I shifted my focus on her, giving her small responses to make it seem like I was paying attention when really my eyes were on the door - looking for Seb.
"Broooke!" A whiny voice and a sharp shove jolted me out of my focus.
"Yes?" I asked the impatient Ella
Her eyes flicked up to ivy, then her figure followed "who is this?"
"Do you not remember Ivy?"
"Oh. You came before school"
Ivy nodded at her and replied with a short "Yeah, yeah I did "
Right on queue Seb wandered out of the door, slow as ever, with no enthusiasm. I felt bad for him, he clearly didn't want to be there. He was too smart for his class, too mature for the after school clubs and yet that's where he spent the most of his time. Though he rarely ever complained about it. Even if he had, he still would have been doing the same thing. Because there were no other options.
My parents schedules had lately been shifted and moved but they were evening out again. So that they were mostly both home on a night. It was brilliant but still they needed to catch sleep and get hours in. The point is that they were trying their best but it meant Seb would still have to (as Seb himself would say) be subjected to juvenile activity.
"Good day?" I lightly questioned
"Tolerable" he replied back.
I could see Ivy, out of the corner of my eye, attempting not to laugh. My two siblings were polar opposites, but Seb was just different. Mature. And so very well educated
"Seb you remember ivy"
Just like Ella, he looked ivy up and down before giving her a false smile.
"Why is she here?"
And I answered him honestly "because she wanted to be"
He looked taken aback at my answer, but satisfied enough he began to walk infront of me. Then another small hand slipped into my left and we started up the path.
Ivy made small talk with Ella, having the strange ability of being able to captivate my younger sister in pointless conversation. I kept my eye on seb, he was only a meter in front but it was a necessary action.
