Once I was finally alone in my room, I found myself catching my breath; my eyes squinted shut and I sank down against the wall next to the door in a tired daze. I flicked onto the call icon on my phone and hit Ivy. Her name flashed on large letters on my screen and I moved the object to my ear. Sure enough after two rings the sound of my girlfriend asking,
"Are you okay?" came to my ear.
"Yeah doing good. You?"
"I'm fine. It's kinda boring here without you"
I fake gasped "only kind off"
"My bad" Ivy laughed "bored out of my mind without you"
"Shame"
"Isn't it? Anyway how has home been?"
"Fine fine"
"Just fine? What have you been doing for the past however many hours" Ivy questioned, a small tone of something authoritative in her voice.
After walking in the door and meeting my siblings there had been no doubt in my mind that it was the right thing to be home. The way Seb had embraced me and Ella's excited voice reinforced what I had known, I wanted to be there. Granted I didn't exactly expect the chaos of the night that followed but such is life.
"Baked cookies for a good hour"
"Oh?"
The kitchen had always been my safe place in the house, it was my domain. Mum and Dad were hard workers and they did cook but after a point it just made sense for me to be in there more; I had more free time and an eagerness to learn which just led to a natural take over. Some of the best memories of my siblings had been in the kitchen, the messes the giggles and the general experiences were irreplaceable in my mind.
When I had walked into the kitchen, Ella was infact splashing Jack, his red shirt splattered with darker red fragments that weren't there before
'I think your hands are well and truly clean' I said as I picked Jack up and sat him on the corner of the counter.
Ella beamed at me, her teeth showing with a small gap in the front.
'Did you loose a tooth?'
She nodded 'I'd been wiggling it for a while'
I shook my head at her fondly and glanced over to Seb. He was stood quietly, as usual, but somehow it was different, he was watching me. Probably unsure, maybe trying to piece things together but defiantly curious.
'What type of cookies?' I asked walking over to the cupboard, 'we have normal or white'
Ella looked at Jack, I swear the pair could communicate without words but oddly enough it was Seb that answered.
'Both'
I nodded and retrieved the chocolate from the shelf
'I don't want to have to choose'
'Sometimes we don't have to' I replied
He nodded, a look in his eye that I will never be able to pinpoint.
'Do you wanna break it up or help with us?' I laughed 'we can't let Ella break it up'
My sisters cheeks flushed with red and a small giggle rose again from her. She was happy, unconditionally and it was beautiful to watch.
'I'll break up the chocolate' he responded.
I watched carefully as he took the two bars from my hand then a plastic bowl from the cupboard and walked over to the table. He sat so he was facing me, head down looking at the chocolate.
