I knew I made the right decision as I slid my phone into my back pocket. My parents looked stressed, my mum high on anxiety and my dad far too focused on Ella's drawing. They didn't want to see my friends. Maybe they didn't want to answer to the reputation they knew they had built. But it was clear to me. They didn't want to see them.
"I'm really sorry" I said "but they aren't coming"
My mums eyes snapped up to mine. Her body rested up against the sink, a look serious but relived.
"They aren't?" I nodded "why"
"They all had things to do, so I just thought it made sense for me to just go hang out at Ivy's instead of us waiting here"
An unmissable look of pure relief in my mums face. She didn't want Ivy in the house.
"Oh okay"
I nodded again. The awkward tension in the room started to rise again. We had moved forwards but not passed and that kept us in this small box. Both of unsure how to act.
"I can always cancel"
"No"she shook her head "you should go see your friends"
"Are you sure? I get it if you want me to stay here today"
"No" my dad replied from next to Ella "we had you this morning, your friends can have you the rest of the day"
It was maybe 20 minutes later that I was sliding into Ivy's car. I remember watching the way she put her car into reverse. The rush I got as her left arm extended out to my seat as she checked the blind spot behind me.
"Happy birthday" she smiled
"Thank you"
"How's your day been"
I smiled at my girlfriend, as her eyes glanced to me in the mirror as she drove.
"Actually good"
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah but I reckon you'll make it better"
She smirked, her stupid Ivy smirk.
The short distance to her house got even shorter and the familiar crunch of her car rolling onto the stone driveway chimed in my ear. There were no other cars outside the main house.
"No one home" I asked
"Nah I think they are with Amber and the kids" she replied
"Oh where do they live"
Ivy parked the car "still in Bristol, I mean it's only like a 1 1/2 drive so they'll be back later"
"Oh nice"
Ivy opened the car door and walked towards the annex door; I followed suit and soon we were in the little entry way. As soon as I stepped inside, and closed the door I felt the distinct pressure of hands on my shoulder backing me into a wall. I looked up to my girlfriend's face to see the flicker in her eyes as her body pushed closer to mine. There wasn't even an inch between us yet it was too much, it felt like a mile. We kissed. A deep kiss. It was fiery and full. It was while kissing her then that I realised I would never get tired of kissing her, it would always be exciting.
Gradually, we pulled away. Our nerves itching for more from each other. And yet not enough time for anything more.
I glared at Ivy.
"Don't blame me" she laughed
"You started it"
"Sorry I just won't kiss you anymore" Ivy turned, walking towards her kitchen
