30 - haze

I peered out the common room window as the foggy morning air began to clear and sunlight peeked through the haze. It was barely still January but one of the rarely pleasant January days that made me want to spend my time appreciating it. A cancelled lesson meant a couple of hours work alone.

I chose to enjoy the tranquility and happily picked up my copy of The Great Gatspy.

Half an hour later I was in need of some stimulation, boredom seeped through me and being in a room with only my own company provided none. I looked away from my book and glanced back at the sky. A brilliant blue canvassed the school playground, it would be misleading though. Because despite the warm exterior of the day there was a biting cold, a chill that clung to the winter months. Maybe that was just me being cynical.

"Brooke" a firm voice jolted me

I grunted, not wanting to encourage the noise.

"Move or I'll move you"

Ivy, the voice of reason. I knew, even groggy, that she wasn't joking but nor did I care. Why would I care?

Then I heard all the other noises. The sound of quiet chatter and small scratching like pen in paper. I was still in the common room. My eyes suddenly opened and I sat up in the stupidly broken arm chair, that I'd somehow managed to fall asleep in. Ivy was knelt infront of me, staring right at me as if she could see what I was thinking.

"Period 2?"

She nodded, "I have a free did you want to go get some coffee"

My turn to nod.

Ivy stood up and waited for me to the same. Her hands took my tote bag and held it open as I packed up my literature folder and notebook. Waited patiently, even when I had to slid my hand down the side of the sofa looking for my prized highlighter and dumped it in the bag too. However, she wasn't able to conceal her eye roll when we were almost through the common room door and I had to turn around to grab my coat.

A guilty smile came face and I began to open my mouth to apologise when Ivy shook her head playfully at me.

"Don't even bother"

She knew me that well.

I took my tote bag from her and slid it on my left shoulder then captured her hand and locked it in mine. Physical affection, something I was getting used to.

I was right about the weather; deceivingly pretty but bitter. As began to walk outside, Ivy's arm snaked around my waist. She pulled me in, so close I could feel the warmth from her breath on my ear. We walked in almost silence, the noise of a car going passed and general people being faint. It felt as if it were just Ivy and I. Like in those moments it were only her and I that mattered.

"What time do your lessons start?"

"11"

"When do you finish"

"You wanna come over"

It was my turn to pull her in, causing us to stop. I tilted my head up to her then gentle kissed her lips.
