Why did he always fall for the girls who had a boyfriend? It happened to him once before and he had been completely shattered when the girl chose to stay with her boyfriend after kissing him one night. As much as he didn't ever want to feel like that again, George knew there was something between them. The way they could talk to each other, just by looking into each others' eyes, not even saying a word, was something George had never experienced with anyone else before. They seemed to understand what the other was saying before they had even finished their sentence and he couldn't help but feel obligated to protect Fiona from everything bad in the world. Including her own boyfriend.
As much as he would have loved to convince her to leave Miles and become his, he knew she would have to realize on her own that she wasn't being treated as she deserved. He told her how he felt about everything he heard and George could see on her face that she agreed deep down, but she was too afraid to leave him. All he could do was be her friend for as long as she stayed with him and support her in everything she did. Even though it killed him, feeling this strongly for someone whose heart belonged to someone else right now. George cared about her enough to wait for her.
