'Tell me where we've been lost in the storm, I wish we could swallow our pride. Admit that we're meant to break, close the door and walk away'

This had to happen. She looked over at Maddie one last time, who nodded at her and opened her mouth to speak. "Thanks for coming, Miles. We need to talk".

Fiona noticed Miles shift on his chair when she spoke to him in such a confident way. He placed his hands on the table and she could see him squeeze the flesh between his thumb and index finger with his other hand. Now she was the one making him nervous for a change. "What did you want to talk about?" It sounded like it took him a lot of effort to actually let her lead the conversation for once and a small smile appeared on Fiona's face when she noticed the effect she was having on him right now. She had never taken charge in their relationship before, she had always just followed his lead and it was exactly the reason they were sat at this table today.

"There is no easy way of saying this, so I think I'm just going to tell you straight away. I came here tonight to break up with you". She said, trying to keep her composure on the outside, while her hands were trembling beneath the table. "Wait, what?!" He almost yelled before he remembered that they were in a public place. "What? Why?" It seemed to come out of the blue for him and if Fiona was completely honest, it probably was. She had always reassured him and told him everything was fine, when deep down inside she knew it wasn't and it never had been. "I haven't been happy for a while, Miles. It seems like you have my life all figured out for me and I want something totally different".

He opened his mouth for a second, probably wanting to yell at her again, but he changed his mind and let out a big sigh. "I thought you wanted to move in with me and get married and support me". Miles said, now doing absolutely everything to avoid her gaze. It was as if there was a little boy sitting in front of her and Fiona had never seen him like this. "I thought I wanted that too. But I got my own job now and I realized that we are so young. I want to travel the world, live on my own for a while". It was silent for a moment, both of them not sure what to say next. "I'm not mad at you, I have truly loved you all this time, it's just time to move on, Miles". Fiona was the first to speak up again.

Then something happened that Fiona would have never seen coming. Miles looked up to her and smiled. "I understand, I'm sorry for everything I did wrong. I have always loved you and I always will". He stood up and walked over towards her. He planted a kiss on the top of her head, which made Fiona flinch slightly, but she was too shocked to move. "Bye Fifi". Miles said and then he walked away. Fiona was stunned. 'What had just happened?' She had expected him to yell and scream at her, call her names and tell her that he wouldn't accept her breaking up with him. She sat there for a few seconds before Madeleine stood up and sat down on the seat where her now ex-boyfriend was sitting only 30 seconds ago.

"What the hell was that?" Maddie said, having expected him to throw a tantrum in a public café. "I have no idea.." Fiona answered and she looked outside to see Miles' car exit the parking lot. That was it then, she was single again. Even though she was still in shock at how easily he had accepted it, the buckets of bricks had completely fallen off her shoulders now. Her eyes filled with tears and within a second she felt the first one roll down her cheek. Madeleine grabbed her hand from across the table, trying to console her. "I know it's for the best like this, but I did really love him, Maddie". Fiona said, softly sobbing in the empty café. "I know, babes. It's alright".

The first thing Fiona wanted to do, when she had wiped away her tears, was order a drink. The girls would be staying at her parents' house, the destination so close from here they could even walk, so they both ordered a glass of champagne to celebrate this moment. Not only the fact that Fiona was single again, but also the fact that she had been the one to end the relationship and that she had felt stronger than ever while doing so. The girls clinked their glasses together and Fiona snapped a picture to put on her social media later tonight.
