Disclaimer - This is an AU of sorts when everyone is an adult, roughly 25 I'd say!

Birds chirped happily as the sun shone through the curtains of your bedroom window, a beautiful golden light cast upon the furniture in the room.

Soft snores came from beside you, something you would never get used to no matter how many mornings you woke up to see the same beautiful sight.

Her bubblegum pink hair lay sprawled over the pillow as she curled up next to you, seeking for whatever warmth you had to offer.

A relationship stronger than steel, one that went through so many hardships just to get there. You were both close as kids, always dreaming of living together as roommates.

It was a childish dream, one where the world was happy. One in which you could've had a happily ever after.

Now, you'd made that dream come true.

You fought for her, for your two lovely twins, and for all of your friends just to make sure you all got a happy end.

Everyone you'd grown up with already knew how hard the times of war could be, especially the post apocalyptic period, one which could last for years.

The scars still littered your body, ones that you'd only grown to love once Mei had reminded you time and time again that they weren't something to be ashamed of.

Hatsume Mei, the girl you'd gotten to know almost twenty years ago. The girl you'd been best friends with for so long, until she asked you out as a bet.

You held her close, playing with her hair as waves of nostalgia encompassed you.

"Hatsume-Shirakumo?" You mumbled subconsciously. "Shirakumo-Hatsume?"

It was a thought that had plagued you for years, soon after she'd given you a promise ring for Christmas.

'Unbroken promise'

I

t was one of the few items of jewellery that you'd cherished with your life, almost as much as the simple gold ring that sat in the drawer beside you.

You'd made a promise to stick with her forever, yet never done it officially.

Both of you had adopted kids before that and started a family, much to the surprise and confusion of everyone else. They supported the two of you no matter what, having known you for ten years, but it took your friends a while to understand.

"I think it's perfect either way," a second voice mumbled drowsily from beside you, golden eyes smiling up at you softly. "As long as it's you I'm marrying."

"How'd you know I was gonna propose?" You asked, confused.

The bubblegum pink haired girl laughed slightly at that, a melodious sound only you had the luxury of hearing.

"You asked Denki for advice," she teased. "You know how he is with secrets."

You groaned with exasperation at that yet laughed along. It was true, once the electric blonde had nervously proposed to none other than Jirou, you went to him to ask what he did.

It caused a messy reenactment of the scene as well as weeks of him teasing you for finally coming to him for advice, eventhough you were smarter.

The blonde had never been the best at keeping secrets due to his talkative nature, yet you trusted him with your life since you knew he would sacrifice his for you.

"God I still don't know why I love him," you sighed.

"Rude!" Mei scoffed, feigning offence. "I guess I'll tell Kyo-chan that you're cheating - with her fiance!"

You snickered at her antics, glad that your morning had started off in a more relaxing way.

Usually, neither of you could stay in bed for long. You were a hero in the big leagues, managing an agency and hiring sidekicks and interns left and right. Your girlfriend was one of the biggest scientists, having finished her studies at I-Island and come back to Japan to improve the technology and costumes for heroes.

Due to this, you always had to get up early as work was demanding. Not only that, but you also had two children. In the beginning they used to cry a lot, but now they had calmed down much more, growing accustomed to the usual chaos.

One girl and one boy, both with opposite quirks and personalities. Yet they had one thing in common: they brightened up your day by a lot.

There were difficult days, ones where you'd had to kill the villain to win. You'd often come home feeling guilty, wondering if there wasn't anything else you could've done. That was when the two sweet demons you'd grown so fond of did their best to make you feel better, with it often ending in a tickle war.

"Shirakumo-Hatsume Mei," Mei mumbled, smiling as the sun cast a golden glow on her face. "Has a nice ring to it."

Now it was your turn to laugh at the dad joke she'd made. Mei was arguably the more relaxed parent, letting the kids do as they pleased as long as it wasn't hurting anyone. It also showed in your relationship, which had bloomed from something childish and desperate to something far more beautiful and mature.

You on the other hand, were more serious and paranoid. Always making sure your family was safe.

You'd lost people before, you couldn't loose them again.

Both of you understood and respected each other's boundaries and parenting styles, knowing that pushing them could only cause problems rather than solve them.

It was only one of the millions of things you loved about her. Starting from the way her eyes lit up at the smallest of things all the way to the tiniest aspects of her personality, you loved her through and through, and she did the same.

You looked over at her smiling figure, one that had changed through all that you'd been through.

From her calm and stoic nature, she'd become more relaxed and flexible. Her creativity and curiosity never escaped, as well as her willingness to experiment, but she had evidently matured and grown as a person.

You had gone from someone who was reckless and plunged in to attack to someone who was calculating and bided their time. A growth that had saved your life all too many times.

"You know, eight years ago, when all hell broke, I really thought I'd never see you smile again," Mei began, twirling the stray strands of hair that framed your face. "I thought I'd lost you to them."

"Mei-" you interrupted, knowing that it was a sensitive topic for both of you.

She tried to leave it in the past as much as possible, yet feared for your life every day.

After the restless days she spent at the hospital, you couldn't blame her.

"So I made it my duty to make you smile again," she finished.

You smiled in surprise, pulling her in to a hug. The same determination you'd seen all those years ago just in a different manner.

She truly was the devil you'd tamed.
