Drowning.
You were drowning. Your lungs were filled with the searing pain accompanied by the burning sensation of drowning.
But how?
Last you remembered, you were on land.
You slipped in and out of consciousness, heroes taking turns keeping watch as each one performed first aid. Your heartbeat was still audible, no matter how weak it was, and they clung onto that last hope.
'Come back,' Mei smiled sadly, handing you her knife.
However, it grew weaker every passing second, to the point where the soft hands currently performing first aid on you had to stop multiple times to listen, to see if you were still breathing.
If you'd known it was the last time you'd see her, you'd have held her tighter.
You were rapidly losing blood, your clouds and clothes absorbing it all for you.
A short goodbye and a promise that you'd survive, something that you'd only end up breaking.
But worst of all, the wound inflicted by the Yakuza during the Shie Hassaikai raid, had nearly reopened.
You've never broken a promise, you didn't want your legacy to end with one.
The sound of people talking was blurry, barely made it into your mind as the blinding pain blocked out all other information. The only thing you had to work with was your declining sense of touch.
Legacy?
Your body warmth was also decreasing, going from a fever due to overuse, to below your normal temperature as the rain continued to cool you down in its dying breaths.
You, the number two sidekick and now pro hero and always only worried about your future.
Suddenly, you were picked up by multiple hands, one of which was cold. You recognised your friend and desperately wanted to assure him that you were fine, assure him that you were still alive, that he was worrying about nothing.
Not a future with her, but your career.
But you couldn't fucking move.
You'd gotten consumed in it, with there being weeks in which you barely slept because of a new case.
Every twitch of your limbs brought searing pain with it, yet you couldn't scream.
She always stood by your side, she always ensured your safety, she always made sure you would come out alive.
Your body wasn't listening to you, it wasn't cooperating.
But now, she wasn't there.
The next thing you felt were tears, dripping onto your chest as the person trying to stabilise you realised the sad reality.
When it wasn't her, it was Kaminari, but he was on the other side of the city, risking his life in a situation you'd thrown him in to.
Conversations floated about you as they all worked toward defeating the common enemy, some enraged, most confused or saddened.
Denki.
It wasn't long before you were lain down to rest, bandages wrapping your back and chest, while the war continued.
He'd never forgive you, even if you came out alive. He always worried about you, even when he could see that you were safe.
"I'm sorry I couldn't save you," Todoroki whispered, tears falling down onto your cheeks as he leaned in, hoping his words would reach the last bit of your conscience.
Communications were down now.
They did.
You couldn't tell anyone about the searing pain that burnt through your body, because no one would be able to hear.
You desperately tried to open your eyes, tried to assure him that he hadn't failed you.
A bright light surrounded you as you tried to stay away from it. Memories of Mei, Kaminari and Eri warming you just a little bit as you desperately tried to hang on.
The rain soaked through his clothes, even getting onto some of the bandages he'd applied on you. But it all went away slowly.
Eri. You promised she wouldn't have to experience anything sad again. You promised you would survive, you promised things would be alright.
That's when you heard a deafening scream of raw emotion.
Was it all a lie? Were you that incapable that you couldn't even fulfill the hopes and dreams of a seven year old girl?
You couldn't do anything anymore, you didn't know how to help. So you did something you never did.
A small part of your mind continued to tell you to stay away from the light, to not go near it no matter what. But you were getting weaker, you couldn't resist much longer. Suddenly, you saw something flash behind the bright glow.
You relaxed. No, you gave up.
A scenery you thought would never be possible, something so happy it seemed like it was right out of a fairy tale. You, Mei, Denki and Jirou, all in a forest. It seemed like a picnic with the four of you laughing and talking while the kids played, occasionally insisting either you or Denki to join.
Todoroki tensed as you went limp in his arms, but continued to hold you close in the hopes of providing some warmth to keep you alive just a bit longer.
Your breath hitched at the sight as you remembered Mei's promise to adopt kids with you, once you had gotten more self control.
You hung on with everything you got, trying to prevent all your dreams from collapsing within itself all due to your death.
If it wasn't possible in this reality, perhaps in another?
Todoroki performed another round of CPR, trying to get you to respond to his familiar ice cold though.
Wait for me, Mei.
But it was all futile.
You ran towards to the light, happiness blinding you as you saw the false reality.
The boy suddenly stopped applying pressure onto your chest, even the small spark of hope of your survival extinguished.
Mei.
He choked back tears, trying to convince himself it was a dream, a nightmare gone terribly wrong, only to burst into uncontrollable sobs when his own fragmented reality turned out to be false.
Denki.
The bloodshed continued around you, this time without the hope of the general returning.
Eri.
Enraged heroes continued to fight for revenge and salvation, each one channeling more power into their attacks now that you couldn't tell them what to do.
Wait for me.
After all, it was your sympathy that had gotten you killed.
