Chapter 50: A Broken Promise

You found yourself on the school roof, the moon high into sky as the night grew darker, stars brightening up the area.

'My dearest Mei,' you'd written in your letter. 'I hope by the time you find this letter I'll be long gone, so as to put you through less pain.'

You sighed, admiring the beauty of the night. Never would you have thought yourself to be in this situation, yet here you were, preparing to jump in the hopes that your quirk wouldn't save you like it did last time.

"You've already been through enough because of me," you mumbled as you recalled all of the crises that happened even before the war.

The wind whistled in your ears, trees rustling rhythmically along to it. Cars filled the streets with traffic and incoherent yelling could be heard even from here.

It was late at night, but with the U.A dormitories being overcrowded there was constant noise as students chattered with each other and with their families.

Amongst the crowd, however, was a black sheep who was lonlier than ever. She had no one, she never did, and everyone who she loved just ended up leaving.

You looked up at the stars, looking for constellations, a pastime you'd had with Mei before. A part of you was questioning, if it really was the right choice.

But as you sat there, a serene smile on your face at the mere thought of escape, you realised there was no going back.

'Don't you, at the very least, deserve a happy ending?'

You looked down at your hand instinctively, noticing that it was just as bare as before your ring had gotten damaged. But once the ring had gotten much too damaged, along with your relationship, Mei took them back.

While she didn't take your ring, you still returned it to her in a small velvet box alongside the book.

"I wanted to grow old with you, spend more time with you," you sighed.

'Did you not want the same?'

Truth was, she probably did, but she was scared and fear causes people to run. But heroes can't run, they either retire or die.

You chose the latter.

'Even if this is the last thing I will ever tell you, I wanted you to know....'

"That I'm sorry for any pain I may have caused you," you finished, reaching down to take off your shoes and set them to the side.

Next, was your jacket and all the weapons you carried.

You sat on your wheelchair, gingerly holding your staff as you debated whether to keep it or not. Choosing to leave it here, you set it down gently on the pile of clothes you'd crafted.

Shakily, you stood up, wind rushing through your hair your pants billowing along with it. You were only clad in the cargo pants from your uniform and the thick bandages that were wrapped around your torso, everything else had been cast aside.

You took a deep breath and smiled, the nighttime air being one of your favourites in Musutafu.

Though before you could relax your body and allow it to finally crumple, a slam alerted you.

"Y/N!" A familiar voice yelled, golden eyes scanning the area before meeting your own. "Y/N don't!"

"Why not, I'm legally dead anyways," you shrugged, inching backward towards the ledge.

"Because we'll miss you!" Kaminari reasoned, rushing over to you. "I'll miss you!"

By now you had one foot on the ledge already. All that was needed was a tiny push.

"I hope you understand how hard that is for me to believe," you mumbled, looking down.

"Y/N please," Kaminari begged. "I love you!"

That shock was all it took for you to stumble backward, falling to your certain death.

"Y/N!" Kaminari screamed, reaching out for you.

"Say hi to Eri for me, tell her I'm proud," you requested, before finally relaxing yourself as you prepared for the fall.

You could hear multiple conversations all around you, most loud, but suddenly you began hearing footsteps in your drowsy state. While you were essentially unconscious, you still had a mild grasp of your surroundings due to your intense quirk training.

One pair of footsteps was extremely familiar, as the owner rushed to your body, tears streaming down his face. He attempted shaking you, begging you to wake up, but nothing ever worked.

You were dead and this time not even you could change the outcome.

The first pair was soon followed by a second, swift pace, the owner not having been filled in yet. Though, as she saw the situation, she quickly put two and two together.

Expression colder than the steel she used to tamper with, face showing no signs of emotion. But her eyes betrayed her soul, and the only person who had the key to it lay dead at her feet.

Muffled conversations happened around you, soon with doctors and paramedics as well. But no one had come to terms with the harsh reality of the situation.

Your death could've been stopped this time, if only they had paid more attention.

The pitter patter of tiny footsteps suddenly surrounded you, multiple voices ushering the child away as the paramedics checked multiple times to see if you were alive.

Though they came bearing news grimmer than the tar in the underworld.

A young girl and her best friend cried together, the class given the duo some space. But the only person who never left was the child, who could do nothing other than stare at the dead body.

"Was it my fault?" She asked quietly, turning around. "Did N/N-chan leave forever because of me?"

"Eri no, she loved you," Kaminari reassured her, pulling her into a hug. "She- she says she's proud of you, and she always will be."

"She did?" Eri asked, tearing up, to which Kaminari nodded. "I can fix it, I wanna talk to N/N-chan again! She promised she'd come back!"

"I'm sorry Eri, but not even you can bring her back," Mei sniffled.

"But she promised," Eri whispered.

'Why did she break it?'
