Jack's POV:

It was my birthday weekend. Yes, the big man Jack Manifold was officially another year older. And I was down visiting Niki and Rihanna, and hanging out with everyone. Minx had said to leave the Saturday free, and I guessed that meant we would all be doing something. What I didn't expect was a surprise party.

You see, I don't really like surprises. Normally, surprises involve a loud, sudden noise; and whilst the loudness doesn't really bother me, the suddenness does. I'm not good with the unexpected or the uncertain. My friends were great with me being autistic, they were nice people and that was part of the reason I was friends with them. But they had kind of forgotten the sudden noise thing. I suppose since I can play horror games without it affecting me, people aren't aware of it. Truth be told, I've played specific horror games so much that I'm desensitised to those specific jump scares. Confetti cannons, party poppers and people I didn't know were going to be there. I liked parties, but only when I knew they were happening. All I could think about was how this wasn't going to end well.

"SURPRISE!"

"Happy birthday Jack!" It was Niki. She moved from behind me to stand in front of me, and in front of all the people in the room. There were that many of them, and they were all friends. But I didn't know some of them were here, and I wasn't mentally prepared for any of this.

"Thanks." It was quiet and I was forcing myself to smile. I really appreciated it, but I just couldn't handle it.

"Are you alright Jack?" I just hummed and tried to get on with it.

"Wait Jack, I forgot about something. Come with me to the kitchen and we'll leave the others to set this up." It was Gee. She smiled kindly and turned around as she walked to try and get me to follow. I did, awkwardly, but I followed her to the kitchen. We sat down at the small table in there.

Gee's POV:

Minx came into the kitchen where Jack and I had sat down. "Gee can I talk to you a minute?"

"Sure. Jack, let me know if you need anything." He was zoned out, I could see it. So when he didn't respond, I didn't push him to.

"What's up?"

"Niki says she doesn't know what thing we needed to set up."

"Nothing. Sorry. No everything's fine. It's just that Jack seemed overwhelmed and I thought it would be best to give him a chance to process it."

"Oh right, okay. So what, we just sit and wait?"

"Yea, we'll come back when he's ready. No point throwing a party for him if he can't enjoy it!"

"Suppose so. Ok then."

I returned to the kitchen where Jack was wringing his hands through one another. I sat down opposite him and didn't say anything. One, there wasn't much I could say. Two, I didn't think this was the time for talking. I noticed his pinging a hair band on his wrist, biting his lip, jittering his leg. He was nervous, but I didn't know why. "Jack?" He looked up at me: his eyes had tears in them but he hadn't actually started crying yet. "It's ok. You don't have to be anxious. Everyone gets that a surprise party wasn't the best of ideas. You want to explain why you're anxious?"

"I don't want people to think I'm pathetic. I should be happy. You guys have put hard work into throwing me a surprise party and I'm sat in the kitchen crying about it. Just loud, and unexpected. And I didn't even know some of them were coming."

"It's fine Jack. We'll take everything super slowly. And if you need to take a break at any time, like we have done now, we can do that. We are your friends, we like you for you. Okay?"
