When I got out of the Uber, I was greeted by the amazing sight of a house that was so big and old that it could probably be classified as a tiny castle.

As the car disappeared from my sight, leaving the street empty, a light on the house's gate was turned on.

Yup, not sketchy at all.

My phone died at some point of the ride so I had to pray for no one to call me. I guess I can try to rely on my luck this time.

The gate opened and I considered it to be an invitation, so I did what any sane person would do and entered the mysterious property.

On the other side of the gate, there was a tiny garden leading to the front door, which I quickly reached.

Before I could knock, the door opened, revealing the vampire from the restaurant.

"Welcome, dear, to our humble lair," the vampire said in a courteous voice.

Our? There were more vampires?

If there were others, I sure couldn't hear them.

"First things first, I'm Haven Montblood." The vampire stretched their hand and I shook it. "And you are Amelie, I suppose?"

I let go of their hand.

Amelie. I had a pendant with this name engraved on it. It was the only thing I had from my mother, and I knew it wasn't her name. It was mine.

"How do you know it?" I questioned the vampire in a threatening tone, even if I knew it wouldn't work.

"Well, I am your father's sibling after all," Haven chuckled as if this was the most obvious thing ever, but I guess they realized my confused expression and decided to do something about it. "Why don't we get inside and talk a bit more, shall we?"

I nodded and let my recently discovered relative lead me into the house.

-- -- -- --

Apparently, my father Vlad used to talk to Haven a lot about my mom, about how she was a meta but it didn't matter cause they loved each other and how she eventually got pregnant with the help of a grandwitch.

They were all shocked by it at first - the weird pairing and all - but also really happy, and Haven even helped them choose my name.

It was a lot of information, but I guess I had a bloodline still walking on earth?

My father was hunted down after they killed my mother's side of the family, so I always thought I was by myself in it, but I was wrong.

"So, what have you been up to these days, Amelie?"

"I don't want to sound rude, but could you call me Hunter? It's just that for now, Amelie sounds like a whole different person. Maybe one day I'll be able to be that person, but not yet."

Haven nodded, and then I kept talking.

"Well, last year I got here with a mission of killing a pack of werewolves, but I just couldn't do it. They're more of a family than I've ever had before."

"Do they know that you're a hybrid?"

"Nope, and that's another one of the problems. In a month, Silas is going to come here to solve this problem of me not completing the mission, and I wasn't sure of what to do, but I guess I am now."

"What's your plan?"

"Well, I'll find the right moment to tell the others about what I truly am, and then I'll go after the Soilés before they come after me."

"This sounds pretty dangerous, but I want you to know that I will help you with anything you need. I've been meaning to avenge your parents for a long while and it seems to be a good opportunity."

Nothing better than bonding over revenge I guess.

"But if you want to have a chance in this battle, you should learn to control your vampire side properly. You're not feeding, are you? I could see the way you drank that juice. Also, I did add a special thing to it. It was three-quarters juice and one-quarter blood."

"I knew it!" I felt something weird while drinking the juice, the same thing from when I drank Casey's coffee.

Wait, did she put blood in the coffee? Probably not.

"I just don't get why I'm only starting to crave it now. I can't even eat normal food properly anymore."

"Well, something must have triggered it, but all you can do is to drink at least one cup a day to make sure you get stronger, and your hunger for food will probably come back. I'll supply you some if you want."

"It'll probably take a while until I'm hungry again since I kinda drank a whole wolf yesterday."

"You what?" The older vampire stood up. "Hunter, you shouldn't drink another supernatural's blood unless that person is your mate. The consequences could be..."

"Making your hair go red?" I suggested.

"Yes, and depending on how strong the supernatural is, you can get out of control. When we drink blood we also drink power, and if you can't handle the amount, you can lose your mind. Some vampires go insane after the first time drinking, but maybe you can control it better since you're only half-vampire."

"Okay, noted," I assured. "I guess that explains why I felt much stronger than usual."

"True, and since I mentioned it I can't help but be curious." Haven sat back down. "Have you found your mate yet?"

I scoffed.

"Sorry, but I just don't get why people think I'll have a mate. I'm not even a full supernatural with proper abilities."

"Doesn't mean you can't have a mate, you know? Your mother was a meta and she was mated to a vampire."
"Yeah, but I doubt it'll happen anytime soon. Doesn't it take centuries until you find your mate?"

"Not necessarily. Perhaps you already came across yours and you just aren't looking at the situation in the proper way."

"I may not be the best when it comes to relationships but I think I'd know if I felt pulled to someone."

"Are you interested in anyone?" They asked, and I stared awkwardly at the floor. "What? I'm a sucker for romances. I'm already over seven hundred years and haven't found my mate, so I supply myself with what I can."

"Actually, I may have a crush on this girl."

"Hmmm, I'm getting a vibe from it." And with those words, the vampire's aura went from powerful and wise to a fourteen-year-old teenage girl. "Was she at the restaurant the other day? The one with the purple eyes?"

"Yeah, how do you know?"

"Cause when the werewolves stared at me, she was the one that looked the readiest to pounce. I'm pretty sure she likes you back, so you should totally go for it."

"Really?" I asked incredulously, and Haven nodded. For some reason, I just knew that I could trust this old vampire, so I considered the thing with Casey, but I wouldn't make a move.

Not until everyone knew the whole situation.

Even if I wasn't her mate, perhaps we could still be together. A supernatural could have to wait several centuries before finding their mate, so maybe I did have a shot.

Haven and I talked a bit more, and they gave me a few enchanted blood bags that wouldn't smell like blood and looked like strawberry juice.

After that, I promised to text sometimes to schedule some training sessions so we'd be ready when the metas came.

For the first time, I felt like I knew what I was doing, and it was great.
