"A few centuries ago, a witch called Thumrose was really into doing some crazy stuff," Sinna began. "But, as powerful as he was, he still couldn't manage to gather enough power to do it. How do I explain it..."
She scratched an imaginary beard as she paced around.
"Oh! Let's pretend this is a videogame and you have your stamina bar. You can only use that much before you need a recharge and, as you level up, or get older in our case, your stamina bar increases its maximum capacity."
We all nodded, understanding her example.
"So, let's say that he had a maximum capacity of 10 but he needed 20 to complete the spell. He didn't want to wait another couple of centuries to perform it, so he created this beautiful thing called the Thumrenom's Stone. He'd discharge all of his power in it, rest, and do it again. Soon enough, instead of waiting centuries, he could use the stone as a catalyst and do whatever he wanted."
"Isn't the stone just a myth?" Dana asked in disbelief. "If it was this simple to increase power, anyone would do it. Also, people searched for it for ages and no one ever found it."
"Just because he did it, doesn't mean it was easy," she said bitterly. "You see, Thumrose ended up being mated to our "witch mother", Renna. She was the one who told us the story and confirmed that it is true. Except that he didn't just create the stone out of nowhere, he paid a big price for it."
"What did he do?" I asked, urging her to keep going.
"To be able to send his power to the stone, the object had to have at least a bit of soul in it," Saria explained since her sister had gone quiet. "So he sacrificed his bond with Renna and shifted it into the stone."
Everyone seemed to be surprised, even sad about those words.
I was too, but not as much as them. Other supernaturals probably grew up listening to stories about mates and their love for each other, how they were made for each other.
I've read about those stories, but until a while ago I didn't even think I'd even have a mate, let alone find them.
"Thumrose and Renna were still together, but it was different. She loved him, and he loved her back. Except that this time he loved his power more. Soon enough, other witches started to attack him, wanting his power, and Renna decided it wasn't worth the risk.
"But how did the stone end up in my scooter of all things?" Casey asked, and we were all curious to know the answer at this point.
"One day, Thumrose knocked at Renna's door to give her the stone. He'd been poisoned and didn't want it falling into the wrong hands. She also didn't want it to herself as it only brought her pain, so she decided to hide it. Except she couldn't."
"Why not?" Mason asked.
"The stone could still be sensed by tracking spells," Saria sighed. "After that, she decided to give it to someone who could gain nothing from it, someone that she had befriended a long time ago. Your grandfather. He promised to protect it with his life in the best way he could, and he was clever."
"If it can be tracked by spells, how come none of you have found it yet?"
"Well, several years ago we could still eventually feel a glimpse of it, but then it disappeared. We contacted Andurin and he told us he had taken care of it, and after a while, he was killed by some metas. We had assumed that he had managed to hide it somewhere since it was most likely not destroyed, but we could never find it or sense it again."
