Dad began his story making sure I had the snacks and drinks I would need . Mom rolled her eyes as we watched dad bring out the chips and candy from the pantry. Supposedly dad's been dying to tell anyone about the story, but due to the secrecy he couldn't.
"There are going to a lot of things you're going to learn, Y/N," mom says quietly, "things that you might change your perspective about us," she grabs my hand, "and you need to know that we always will and do love you,"
I squeezed her hand, "I know. I've heard stories upon stories about the lives of spies, people admitting to who they've hurt, and... eliminated," I look towards dad who walked in, snacks in hand, "I would be naive to assume that you had no missions like that, and that I wouldn't have missions that would require those kinds of measures," I smiled weakly.
Mom places her hand on my cheek, "I don't remember when you became so mature," she smiles, a hint of nostalgia in her eyes, "I like it,"
"Thanks mama,"
Dad sets down the snacks, and giddy starts thestory, "Your mom and I, we had different names back in the day, I usually went as Dan, easy not normally known, and your mother went as Angie. Those were our codenames for a very long time, and they were the ones we used for the mafia, for drug cartels, and well literally every mission,"
I raise an eyebrow, "You used the same names for every mission? Isn't that risky? People didn't know your names?"
"We didn't use the same name for every mission, we just used these names while we were doing work in the New York mafia," Mom interjected for him.
I nodded and dad continued, "We were, obviously married, and we had the task of going in as boyfriend and girlfriend assassins. We created a name for ourselves as the King and Queen of assassins, even though, literally neither one of us had killed anybody," Mom coughed, "up until that point," dad added.
That means they killed... someone... or multiple someones. I kept my mouth shut. I can't judge them for something I may or may not have to do in the future.
"We were tasked to go undercover into the New York mafia, as I said, and we were to gain their trust and when they were about to make an upcoming deal with the Vegas Mafia, we were to attack and swat teams were going to come down and arrest everyone,"
"Seems like a solid plan," I commented
"It would have been," mom said, "but our handler at the time happened to be a mole for Raphael, the NY Mafia boss,"
I gasped, "there was a mole in the FBI? How's that even possible?"
Mom and dad shrugged, definitely hiding something, "We don't know. But we found out way too late,"
"So what did you do?" I asked, taking a handful of popcorn.
"We continued on with the mission because we hadn't known at the time what, or who the mole was, and we assumed no one knew about us," Mom said,
"But the boss did?" I asked
She shrugged, "As far as we know, he didn't know about it until the day before the swat team was supposed to arrive, but I guess thinking back on it, he could have known earlier than we believe,"
"Wait, so what happened to the mole?"
Mom and dad looked at each other. Without words they spoke to each other, "Well," mom started, "Your father and I were talking, in our usual spot. It was two days before the swat team was on schedule to attack. Although, honestly, it was so long ago, I barely remember,"
Dad cleared his throat, and interjected, "So, while we were talking, the mole had recorded the conversation. I think we had gone over the plan on how we would be taken in, and who would do it,"
"And you were talking to him about all of this?" I ask, "because he's your handler,"
"Exactly," Mom said, "So when I saw him recording this on one of the government issued pens, I freaked, and I hit his head with a bottle, effectively knocking him out,"
Mom started tearing up a little, so dad continued for her, hit breath hitching as well. It's clear that whoever the mole was, had been someone close to both of them, "We took him to his place where he would stay to make our next plans, and tied him up. When he had woken up, he explained everything to us about his relationship with Raphael, his affiliation with the mafia, all of it. But then he said that we had to get him an immunity deal and should call our superiors," Mom looked at the ceiling, avoiding my eyes and spoke, "We didn't follow protocol, and made a deal with him, instead of getting superiors involved. But Raphael started asking questions, wondering if we had seen the mole," Tears streamed down her face, "What he didn't know was that I killed the mole in a similar fashion to the assassin Genie, of a different Mafia, but Raphael saw right through it, and knew it was me that killed him. He made a deal with me, telling your father and I to leave and never come back,"
"Why would he make a deal with you? Wouldn't he just want you dead?"
"Your mother had a... very close relationship with Raphael," Dad explained vaguely.
"Do I want you elaborate?" I asked carefully
Mom shook her head, "It's not anything you're thinking, he seemingly fell in love with me, and because of that he let your father and I leave the country within the day,"
"And you just left?!" I was shocked.
"We didn't have any choice. The FBI basically fired us for not following protocol and left us to fend for ourselves, and we had found out your mother was pregnant with your sister," Dad said, "We came here and started over, but the Commissions knew what had happened, and recruited us to become heroes. We took the jobs with nothing else but our wits to keep us alive,"
Mom came over and gave me a hug, "Killing him is the worst thing I have ever done, and I hope you never have to kill a human. I know you must want to kill the hero, but please do understand to not make the rash decision. Killing a human being is too painful, it hurts everyday, and you will never be able to forgive yourself,"
"Mom..."
"This is the story, Y/N, and there are two things you should learn. One. Don't kill people unless you must make that call and two; running away and starting over is a last chance. Your mother and I were lucky that the American Government had been... kind enough to help us keep jobs in the same line of work, but we know of many agents who couldn't start over and ended up on the streets. Make your decision wisely,"
We all took a breath. Mom and dad put the snacks away and by the time I changed and took a shower I realized it was 3am. We decided to sleep on my situation before we figured out the next step.
But I think I know what I have to do.
