Tatzelwurms were greatly feared during Medieval times and were hunted excessively. The last known sighting of a live Tatzelwurm occurred in Scotland in 1887.
Tatzelwurms had a venomous bite with many individuals even being able to spit their venom. Anyone that was bitten by a Tatzelwurm or had their venom spit go into their blood stream would always die. However, it is believed that anti venom could have been easy to make if Tatzelwurms had survived into the present day.
According to many stories, even the claws of a Tatzelwurm had venom in them, but this has yet to be confirmed.
Tatzelwurms had acidic blood and many Tatzelwurm hunters found out the hard way that Tatzelwurm blood burned the skin on contact.
Being cold blooded creatures, Tatzelwurms had to hibernate through winter and this is the time of year that many hunters went out looking for them. Their need to hibernate was a big cause of their downfall.
Strangely, most Tatzelwurms didn't use their venom to bring down their prey. They seemed to have preferred suffocating their prey with their large and powerful tails.
Tatzelwurms laid eggs deep underground and it usually took about 6 months for those eggs to hatch.
Naturally lived across Europe, but appear to have had lower populations in the more Northern countries such as Norway, Finland, and Sweden.
Whilst stories say that Tatzelwurms had a lifespan of over a thousand years, it is now believed that they only lived to be around 80 or 90 and the thousand year lifespan was greatly exaggerated.
Allegedly, Tatzelwurms could alternate between making cat noises and snake noises.
Extra Fun Fact: Very old stories say that ancient Tatzelwurms were once capable of breathing fire that was 10 times hotter than Dragon fire. It is theorized that these stories came from people seeing Tatzelwurm/ Dragon hybrids. However, no evidence of such creatures has ever been found.
