Animal Class: Reptile
Diet: Carnivorous
Like their name suggests, they are a saltwater species that have never been seen in freshwater. They are known to live in almost every ocean and Sea on Earth.
Much like Dragons, Sea Serpents come in many different shapes and forms with many types having certain abilities that others do not. The largest can grow to be bigger than most species of whale while the smallest only grow to the size of certain species of jellyfish. They come in a variety of colors ranging from blue to black to green to purple. There is even a type that is rainbow colored. They can have stripes or spots. Some have venomous bites, poisonous blood, electric pulse abilities( like an Electric Eel), the ability to create whirlpools, Etc.
While they have no known ocean predators once fully grown, young ones fall prey to Sharks and other large Fish, Aquatic Mammals like Seals, Dolphins, and Orcas, large Crustaceans, Sea Birds, Krakens, and Hydras.
Sea Serpents have to crawl on to land to lay their eggs and this is when they are the most vulnerable. Many fall prey to land predators before they can make it back to the water.
When Sea Serpent eggs hatch, the young have to make a slow and dangerous trek to the water just like baby Sea Turtles do and many don't make it to the water because they get picked off by predators like Sea Birds and domesticate Cats/ Dogs.
Despite being Reptiles, Sea Serpents have found a way to live in the coldest of ocean waters with many even calling the ocean around Antarctica home.
They have the ability to sense when hurricanes are coming and will dive to the deepest parts of the areas that they inhabit to avoid them.
Sea Serpents are close cousins of Basilisks and like them, they are more closely related to the extinct Titanoboa than they are to modern day Snakes.
Over the centuries, Sea Serpents have been to blame for the disappearances of thousands of ships despite there being little evidence to prove that they did it. While Sea Serpents have been known to attack modern day ships, they seem to only do it out of self defense and appear to be more focused on escaping rather than inflicting damage.
Due to the fact that the largest of Sea Serpents prey on Whales, there are many Whales that have been seen with scars that form the shape of a Sea Serpent bite mark.( In a similar manner to the suction cup marks that are left on Whales by Squids)
Like Basilisks, the exact lifespan of a Sea Serpent is unknown, but sightings/ stories of the same individuals in certain places have gone on for hundreds of years.
Many pirates would go out of their way to find venomous Sea Serpents in order to coat their swords with the venom, so that even people that survived being stabbed by them would most likely die from the venom.
Extra Fun Fact: Old sailor stories tell of talking Sea Serpents that appear to lost sailors that would otherwise be doomed to die at sea. These Sea Serpents would get them to safety, but in more modern times, these stories have become nothing but old superstition.
