Animal Class: Marine Mammal

Diet: Carnivorous

Sirens are much more aggressive and less intelligent can their Merpeople cousins. They are way more animalistic in nature and Merpeople recommend that other creatures avoid going into the parts of the ocean that have high Siren populations.

They have two types of vapor that they spray out of their mouths. One of these vapors is light blue and causes paralysis when it is inhaled allowing the Siren to devour its prey without much effort.  The other is an almost invisible vapor that causes hallucinations when inhaled. The vapor causes prey to hear the roars and cries of a Siren as beautiful singing and see the Siren as either the thing that they love most or the significant other of their dreams. This causes the prey to try to get closer to the Siren and allow the Siren to grab it. They are the cause of many shipwrecks and lost sailors because of this behavior.

Most fully grown Sirens are female because the males are paralyzed and devoured by the females during mating. It is still unclear as to how Sirens are not immune to their own paralyzing vapor. ( However, female creatures can still be affected by the hallucinogenic vapor that is put out by female Sirens)

They are incapable of any kind of speech ( other Creatures usually hallucinate them speaking)  and communicate in roars, growls, and grunts. According to many Merpeople, they can also communicate over long distances using sonar like a Dolphin.

Unlike their Merpeople cousins, Sirens can not breathe underwater and have to come to the surface several times a day to breath. They are not capable of creating the air bubbles that Merpeople use to allow their friends/allies to breathe underwater.

Sirens do not have a way to come on to land like Merpeople do, but there have been cases where Sirens have stolen and used the serum that Merpeople use and have come on to land. These Sirens usually die after the serum wears off because they don't know that they have to return to the water before it runs out. ( They either dehydrate or are eaten by land animals)

A female Siren will mate ( and devour) with many different males throughout her lifetime. They usually have one baby at a time, but twin and triplet births can happen.

Their lifespan is not as long as the lifespan of a Merperson. They usually only live for less than a hundred years and many scientists believe that they could go extinct in the near future because of their cannibalistic behavior. ( Aside from females eating males during mating, the young are often eaten by bigger and older sirens)

While they are perfectly capable of living alone, they travel in small groups, but don't tend to help each other kill prey.

They live in many oceans and seas across the globe, but can't come into freshwater and they try to avoid coming into contact with Merpeople. ( Merpeople are immune to both types of a Siren's vapor)

Extra Fun Fact: Christopher Columbus ( who was NOT the first European in North America because Leif Erikson and his vikings did that about 400 years or so before Columbus was even born) and his crew were attacked and almost shipwrecked by several different groups of Sirens on their first voyage to America. They wrote down on maps where they encountered those Siren groups and avoided them on their other voyages.
