Animal Class: Mammal

Diet: Carnivorous

With only an estimated 900 individuals in existence, Shunka Warakins are one of the rarest species of wild Canine. Only the Ethiopian Wolf is rarer.

They are the only species of venomous Canines. However, instead of being found in their teeth like one would expect, the venom of Shunka Warakins is stored in their claws.

They are native to the Northwestern United States, but there have been unconfirmed sighting of them in some Western States like Utah and Colorado as well as the Canadian Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.

Very elusive creatures, the last time a Shunka Warakin was seen in the flesh was in 2004. Every sighting since then has been on trail cameras.

Despite being a North American species, their closest relative is the South American Maned Wolf. Their urine even has the same Marijuana-like smell.

They are a solitary species and do not form packs like many other Canines do.

They managed to remain an undiscovered species until 1886 when a hunter in Montana killed one after it attacked some of his livestock.

Due to their size ( they are only slightly larger than the average Coyote) and solitary lifestyle, they tend to avoid hunting large prey like Bison, Moose, and Elk and prefer smaller prey like Rodents and small Deer.

Extra Fun Fact: They were originally thought to be a species of Hyena until DNA testing proved otherwise.
