She didn't really think it would be that bad.
Logically, she knew that war came with consequences and she was no exception, but suddenly everything felt terrifyingly real and she could do nothing to stop it.
It felt like a game, at first. Not like a game she played with her friends, more like some combination of a chess and capture the flag. Thinking hard and working harder, but it was competitive. Fun. Energizing.
But then he was shot.
And it was nothing she didn't expect, really. They were in a warzone and people are finite and imperfect.
Anakin grunted and lost his grip on his saber. Then he went falling, falling, it felt slow motion as his body hit the ground and Ahsoka became the major line of defense. Somewhere behind her a clone shouted for a medic, and she was barely working on muscle memory, the force guiding her every move while her panicked mind thought only of the way Anakin laid on the ground with a hole in his leg.
On the ground, vulnerable, easily ambushed and already bleeding-
Focus. I'm okay.
The thought shocked her back to reality, if only slightly.
Anakin looked her in the eye for a brief moment, confirming that it was his voice dripping over into her head.
She took one breath, two, steadied herself and moved back into the defensive stance she'd been taught when she first got her saber, pushing forward. Anakin would be fine. He was with a medic. Slowly, one by one, the droids around them ceased firing, and fell to the ground.
She couldn't be sure how much time it took but her muscles were aching and she was ready to collapse.
But not yet.
Anakin was no longer bleeding out on the ground when she found him, rushing back to base as soon as Rex gave her the signal. He was sitting just inside the medical tent, bandage wrapped around his thigh, casually talking with the medic like she hadn't just been traumatized.
She wanted to run up to him. Hug him, slap him, she wasn't sure.
But she didn't do either, recognizing her position as a Padawan and instead walking (briskly, though, as she was still panicked) towards the tent with no expectations except maybe a good apology for scaring her half to death.
"Hey Snips," He started, seeing her approaching. "Nice job out there. You gained your focus again, wasn't sure if you could do it."
She nodded stiffly.
Clearly he wasn't all that phased by this whole event.
So she spoke like nothing happened, because Anakin didn't seem to feel like anything did. Even if her breath was still unsteady but she was still processing the relief that came with him living and breathing.
========
No one asked her how she was.
And, okay, she wasn't the one that got shot, but at least someone should have asked her how she was after the battle... Right?
