The next day, Rex had improved to the point where he could sit up, but he was far from stable.
He still had constant seizures, wracking havoc on his already weak body. But there wasn't much anyone could do about those.
Fives was there often. When he was, the only thing Rex did was lean against him, closing his eyes and breathing quietly.
It was slightly easier for him to talk, but breathing was a whole different story. He still had to keep an oxygen mask on often. Not constantly, but most of the time.
"You're doing great, Captain," Kix told him. He came over to check him over again as the nausea came back. He really felt like vomiting, but the hypo Kix gave him made that feeling dissipate.
He still felt horrible, so he let himself fall back onto the bed, eyes fluttering closed. The oxygen mask was dropped back over his nose and mouth and then he was out.
When he woke up, he still wasn't feeling that well. But as soon as he woke up, he had another seizure.
His eyes rolled around for a few seconds after it ended and then Fives was helping him to his feet, which felt really weird.
"Up you get, Captain, or you won't be able to use your legs at all."
Rex groaned. "I hate this.."
"I know," Fives replied. "But you do look a lot better."
The Captain sighed, lazily flinging his arms over his brother's shoulders and flopping his head onto his left.
"Cheater.." Fives mumbled before returning the hug.
Rex really wanted to pass out. His grip slackened, and Fives took that as a sign to lay him back down.
"You gotta get your legs working at some point, Captain," Kix chuckled, but Rex just weakly waved him off. "That can wait. 'm tired."
And then he was out. Again. He really couldn't stop sleeping.
The next morning it was just him and Kix. Fives was out on a mission after they gathered a lot of the younger troopers.
Rex didn't feel that was right, but he couldn't really do anything about it.
Kix seemed to agree, but he couldn't do anything about it either.
5 minutes later, Kix was in the middle of trying to make him comfortable because he was starting to deteriorate again, when he took a shuddering breath, tightening his grip on his arm.
"Kix?"
The medic glanced up at him, face already covered in sweat. "I'm alright.."
Rex didn't believe that.
Kix collapsed.
"Kix!" He coughed, ignoring the discomfort and throwing himself off of the bed and dropping to his knees.
"Kix..?" He whispered. The medic was shaking, eyes clouding over. "No. No, not you too.."
The medic looked at him, eyes fluttering.
The Captain quickly pulled him into his arms, eyes wide.
"'s...'s okay.." Kix gasped, squeezing his hand. "Wasn't much...much I could do.."
Rex shook his head. "No.."
Kix smiled, taking a struggling breath. "I..I knew the risks, R..Rex.."
The Captain sobbed. "No—"
Kix pulled him closer so that he was hugging him, although his grip was barely there.
And then it wasn't. He pulled back, eyes widening.
"Kix!" He yelled, voice hoarse. He felt the nausea and weakness coming back. "Kix.."
It took everything in him to avoid throwing up right there on the spot.
He didn't even remember when another medic came in, panicked at the sight. Rex barely noticed the medic moving Kix out of the way before lifting him back onto the table.
There were tears running down his face as he struggled to move. Suddenly, there were various voices, with only one getting close to him.
"Rex.."
He blinked up at Fives through tear-filled eyes. "'m s-sorry. I—I don't know what happened. D-Did I kill him?"
Fives swore. "No. No, of course not," He pulled him up and squeezed him. "You couldn't have done anything. Kix knew the risks."
"'s still not fair.." Rex gasped, coughing hard. "I.."
Fives rested a hand on his chest. "I know. But you need to relax. You're making yourself worse."
One of the other medics came into view. He wanted to protest when the sedative was given to him, but he couldn't fight back against it.
