Everyone had done packing and had assembled in one room to watch Jake 'undo' what he'd done to me. Tristan had explained what happened to everyone. And they agreed that it must be undone. Jake after a few arguments agreed that it was his doing. Though, he didn't mention why he did it.
"Okay, Kyra, look at me." Jake said and I did. His eyes expanded and then relaxed. He said in a soothing voice, "You remember everything. I did not compel you. Katie's in danger. We don't have time." I blinked.
"Katie's in danger? What nonsense?" I asked.
Carla asked, "It didn't work?"
Adam sighed and came towards me and removed the necklace. "There, do it now."
"Oh, right. I did it the first time but forgot to do it now." Jake said. Once again, his iris expanded and relaxed. The soothing effect on his voice had vanished and was now replaced by irritation. "I did not compel you. You remember everything. Katie doesn't have much time." I blinked, again. But this time, it felt like a rock was balanced on my head. I closed my eyes and took everything in. Katie's dying. No time. No time. No time. Those words kept repeating inside my head. I quickly opened my eyes.
"Kyra?" someone asked. It was Katie. "Are you okay?" She looked so thin and pale. The memories were flooding back to me. But I couldn't remember why I lost them in the first place.
"I am. What the hell happened?" I said.
"You," Tristan said, "were compelled by Jake to forget that Katie was in danger."
"What? Why would he do that?" I asked. I was standing but it felt like falling down an endless pit.
"I'm so sorry Kyra." Jake tipped his head to the side. "I just wanted to take away your fear. You were so vulnerable and if someone could come up with a plan, it's you. I did so that you could think straight. I'm so sorry. It sounds silly to me now."
I sighed and said, "Okay, I can understand. But next time, please discuss what you're going to do with others, please."
Jake pulled me into a bear hug and went to get his bag. "Are you really cool?" Tristan asked.
I nodded. He shrugged and said, "I thought you went mad for a moment." I rolled my eyes.
"Alright, come one guys. We have to leave. I took a look at the address. It'll take an hour and a half to get there, just like Kevin said." Adam explained. "But it's a weekday and traffic must be a bit clear. So, we might get there a bit earlier." The time was 9.
"Okay, so we leave now." I said. Carla gave me a grim nod. Katie nodded too and said that she had to use the restroom and left. Carla went down to get all the bags into the car, leaving me and Tristan alone. But that wasn't the thing bothering me. The fact that we may never find Katie's sotíras kept tugging me. I gave up on the effort to control my emotions and let it flow out of me in the form of silent tears. I sat on the bed and pulled my knees up to my chest. Tristan was telling me something indistinctly. He turned around and stopped talking as soon as he saw me. He sat beside me and said, "Hey, I won't say that it's okay, but we'll find them. I uh, I don't know what to say. I'm not the best at comforting people." I threw my hands around his neck and buried my face in his shoulder and said, "You don't need to say anything." To my surprise, he said nothing but stroked my hair gently.
Someone cleared their throat and I jerked back, increasing the distance between me and Tristan.
"Sorry to interrupt but everything's loaded into the car, except us, of course." Carla was suppressing a grin. I ran the back of my hand along my cheeks in an attempt to wipe the tears away. I tucked my hair back and said, "Yeah, I'm coming." Despite the situation, I found myself blushing. Everyone piled into the car and before I could sit comfortably, an argument broke out. I first didn't know what it was about. But then when Adam shouted, "I'm terrified of you Jake, why don't you get it!"
