"Kyra, wakey wakey!" said a really familiar voice. I opened my eyes and there she was! The most unexpected Katie. I forgot that she was here. It was weird having her wake me up after years.
"I wish I'll be woken up by you everyday. I'm sick of mom's yelling." I mumbled.
"Don't worry. I am the one who'll be waking you up each morning."
"Oh, good. Wait, what?" I sprang up.
"Yes! I'm staying here!!" she said and I squeezed her into a tight hug and shouted something like, "Whooo!!!!" I released her and said, "Sorry, I'm gonna go down and uh brush my teeth."
Today was Halloween. While many younger ones would go trick or treating, I was too grown up for that. So I took out all the candy that we had and gave it to the children who came to our door. After some time, the doorbell rang. I went downstairs and took out the candy bag and opened the door. I was surprised to see Carla and his younger brother, Frederick.
"Frederick! Here you go!" I said as I dumped lots and lots of chocolate into his bucket. He grinned and said, "Thank you Kyra!" I smiled back and Carla said, "Mom said I had to tag along with him. The worst job ever!" she grunted.
"Good luck!!!" I said and closed the door. I was just about to leave to my room when someone knocked on the door. I immediately opened it and was shocked at whom I found there.
"Jude?" I asked.
"Yup." she replied.
"I didn't expect you. Shouldn't Tristan be tagging along with you?"
"Hm, I'm old enough to go on my own."
"Anyways, here you go!" I said and gave her lots of chocolate. "Thanks and don't tell Tristan that I was here. He'd kill me if he knows." She said. I shot her a suspicious look and said, "Okay, I won't." She grinned and left. I spent the rest of the afternoon and evening giving candies to kids. I opened my laptop to watch the Originals when Katie said, "We have to go to Tristan's house, remember?"
"Oh, I totally forgot about that." I said as I closed my laptop. It wasn't the time for Netflix. It was 6 already, so I changed into a navy blue top and jeans. I braided my hair and called out to Katie.
"Katie! I'm done!"
"I'm almost done too. Just a sec." she shouted back. I knocked on Jake's door to bring him out.
"Are you ready yet?" I said.
"Actually, I'm not coming. I uh need some time. Just to settle in."
"Oh, okay." I said as I didn't want to bother him. I went back to Katie's room to find her in an eye-catching pink top and jeans.
"Wow, I didn't know you could look this nice!" I said.
"Excuse me? I'm offended." she said with a fake hurt look. I smirked and said, "Whatever. Shall we go?"
"What about Jake?" she asked. She didn't know that he wasn't coming? I just knew that something was definitely going on between them.
"He said he isn't coming."
She looked a bit disappointed but then said, "Okay."
The walk to Tristan's house was mostly silent. But when we were almost there, Katie said, "You know, when Jake first found me on the pavement, he ran away as soon as I opened my eyes."
"Really?" I started laughing. I didn't realise we were already at his house and Tristan was staring at me.
"Sorry." I said and he rubbed the back of his neck and said, "That's okay. Come on in." He said and we entered his house.
"Where are the others?" he asked.
"They're on their way." I replied and he nodded.
"And Jake?" he asked.
"Um, he said he needed some time to relax and settle in."
"Oh."
Carla and Adam came soon after that. Tracy had cooked a really mouth watering lasagne. Dinner was served and we gulped down the lasagne in silence. After everyone was finished, Katie said, "Can someone pass me that glass of water?" Immediately, Tristan, Carla, Adam and I extended our hands to get the glass of water and it shattered. A piece of glass had just pierced the skin of my left hand when Tracy said, "Is everyone okay?" I winced in pain. Blood started to trickle down my palm.
"Kyra, oh my god." Tristan said as he came towards me. "I'm fine." I muttered as I pulled the glass piece out of my palm. I grunted and said, "See? I'm fine."
"You should wash that." a deep voice said from behind me. I turned and saw Paul sitting there. I nodded and headed to the sink. I washed the wound. I came to know that everybody else was fine cause no one else was washing their wounds. I saw that Katie was rubbing on her palm. A glass must have hurt her. And she healed. I hope no one who doesn't know, saw that. I heard Tracy tell Tristan something and he left and returned soon with an aid kit.
"I told you, I'm fine. This is no big deal." I said to him.
"That's okay. All wounds must be treated."
"And where's that dialogue from?" I said with a laugh. He laughed back and said, "From my mom. Before she became a vet, she used to treat human patients. I learnt all these from her." He started applying some kind of antiseptic liquid which hurt like hell.
"Ow, ouch!" I grunted in pain.
"Almost done. There we go, are you okay now?" he asked as he applied a cream which just increased the pain.
"It hurts like a bitch, but I'll be fine." I said. He was now just holding the cotton dab on the wound. I realised he was staring at me, so I looked into his eyes. Such beautiful blue eyes. Actually, to be precise, blue with a tint of yellow and green. I didn't care that I was staring too. Our eyes were locked and I forgot about everything else that was going on. A voice said something that made us break eye contact.
"Uh, is that cute couple gonna come over here or stare at each other for another minute?"
I realised it was Carla. My cheeks went red immediately. Tristan said, "Now, that was not awkward at all." And I said, "Nope," We went back to the dining room and Tracy had already cleaned up the mess we had made.
"Everything okay?" Adam asked and I nodded. Tracy came back and we all told her how delicious dinner was. She thanked us and went to bed. But we had plans. A Halloween Party! Everybody had a job to do except me and Katie. She was just sitting there while I walked around the house. I saw that Tristan was trying so hard to get his hair straight, so I decided to mess it up. I went near him and ruffled his hair with my right hand and he said, "Not my hair!" I giggled and ran away. Something shiny that was lying on the floor caught my eye. It was just before the entrance to the basement. I went there and bent down to pick it up, and that's when I lost my stupid balance I tumbled down the stairs or maybe someone dragged me down. The loose strands of my hair were all over my face. I tucked them back and was quite shocked at whom I saw.
"Mr.Mendoza?" I asked.
"I thought you were Katie. You have similar hair." he replied in a grumpy voice
"I've heard that before but, what did you want with her?"
"I wanted to show her something."
"Um, I heard my name pop out." Katie said from above.
"Mr.Mendoza wants to show you something." I said. She walked down the stairs and stood next to me. Even though a bulb was glowing, the basement was dimly lit. I couldn't take a proper look at what was behind Paul.
"Kyra, you can leave now." he said. I thought for a moment before saying, "I think I'll stick with Katie."
"Fine." He said and he asked us to move a step forward and turn around. So we did. Now his back was facing the entrance. He took out a crossbow in which was a dart in the place of an arrow.
"I used this to hunt squirrels and rabbits." he started explaining. "Then, deer. And so on. Now, I use it for something totally different. To kill things.... like...." he pulled it into firing position and aimed it somewhere on the ceiling. And he quickly pointed it straight at us. Not us, Katie and said, "You." and fired it.
