Apparently she had landed because she was online. I facetimed her immediately.
"Explain." I said as soon as she picked up.
"I will. Just hear me out completely, okay?" she said. I could tell that she was flustered.
"Okay just start." I think she knew I wouldn't ask her questions like ' How was the flight?' or 'Did you settle up in the room?' as she straight away started her explanation.
But she was interrupted by a humming noise from someone. It was a male voice and I recognised it as Jake's. He was humming 'Drag me Down' from One Direction.
"Is he one too?" I asked out of curiosity.
"Yeah, he is." She said.
"At least that one has a good choice of songs." I said I put on a little tight-lipped smile to cut the tension .
She smiled back. Jake, who supposedly heard this, appeared behind Katie's back and whispered, "Does she know?" Katie nodded her head and said, "She figured it out."
"Well now that you know, I need to tell you something." Jake said in a serious tone.
"Okay?" I said.
"Yoursisterhangsdowntheceilingwhileshesleeps!!!" The words fell out of his mouth, and it took me a lot of time to realize what he said. ' Your sister hangs down the ceiling while she sleeps!' And I burst out laughing. By the time I finished realizing what he said and laughing, Katie got him well. He said." Ow, damn you Katie." and went away from the scene of the crime.
"Well, done talking with that jerk? Just so you know, anything he says is a lie."
"Yeah go on." I said, while struggling to control my laughter.
She cleared her throat and went on. "Well first thing's first, I don't know who turned me into a vampire."
"You mean, you don't know who your sire is?"
"Uh what the hell is a sire?"
"Oh right, sorry. My mind's full of vampire diaries."
"You watched a commercial tv show about us? You know, this media and public have us totally wrong."
"Okay. Go ahead." I said and still was unable to control my laughter.
She cleared her throat and continued, "We call the person who turns us into vampires as sotíras. It is a Greek word that means 'saviour'."
"Wait, they give you bloodlust, turn you into blood-sucking creatures and call themselves 'saviours'?" I scoffed.
"Hey, I know it's hard. It's difficult to digest it all at once. But here's what they actually save us from, mortality and pain." When I didn't reply, she continued. "2 years back, I was driving to a shop in Jake's car. Another car appeared out of nowhere. And we collided. I was dying. That was when my sotíras saved me." Tears flooded my eyes. I tried blinking many times to hold them back but in vain.
She was trying to stop but I objected to her and insisted on continuing.
"So.. How does one turn into a vampire?" I asked, while wiping the tears from my eyes.
"Umm. Let me start from the beginning. In the deep dark and unfound Greek mythology, it is said that Hades, the lord of the underworld had a secret little pet vampire, who was in the form of a bat. After it was dismissed by it's master, the vampire settled upon a tree that bore fruits. It is also said that the first of the humans ate the fruit which was bitten by the vampire. That's how the first ever human vampire formed. We call him, 'the immortal one' as he cannot die, at least not by a silver dagger, like us. The only thing that could kill him was the vampire's venom. But it is nowhere to be seen now. So coming to the point, the fruit is called 'prute'. Something like vampire + fruit."
"Um but the vampire bit just one of your so-called 'prute', right?" I asked.
"The powerful venom of the vampire was sucked up by the roots and now every fruit the tree bears, is poisoned with it's venom."
"Someone has done their homework." I said. She smiled a little and continued,
"A human has to eat at least a bite of the prute and........." she hesitated to say the next part. I knew what would come.
"..die to become a vampire, right? So you're dead? I mean you look good and well, talking to me now." I couldn't say anymore. I was on the verge of having a mental breakdown.
"I think that's enough for today. I'll leave you with your thoughts. Have basketball practice?" she asked.
"No" was all I could get out of my mouth before I hung up.
