If a nation isnt in their country they get sick with the time.
And this sickness worsens over time.
This is why they cant just run away.
The disease starts showing after a month of being away.
It can be 'lessened' if the land their in is somehow connected to their own. E.g. through colonisation.
But for example, during the cold war, Russia wanted all the Soviet States to live in Moscow. His plan held for a few months before they became sick.
Of course, it depends what the symptoms are or if its more mental than physically.
Prussia ran away from the Teutonic order once cause he was scared. He endured a few months and was in Novgorod by the time it became unbearable.
