He has difficulties identifying as German.
The main reason is because everyone always told him he's not "really German". He himself has traumatic memories by the Teutonic Order.
Gilbert first completely refused then he slowly was accepting a façade and nowadays he returns to his Arabic roots. He occasionally wears a scarf and wide clothing and speaks more Arabic.
