Gilbert slowly had built himself a reliable underground network from which he learnt about the attempt to fight for freedom by the Germans.
He did not hesitate when he began joining the resistance and stabbed France in his back, spying on him and at last literally stabbing him in the back and running away, proceeding to join the forces and a few weeks later Germans won and Gilbert joined his king anew.
When he talks about the time he was a servant, Gilbert calls it enslavement.
