CHAPTER 1

PATRIARCA FAMIGLIA MANSION
AGNEZKA PATRIARCA POV

A room filled with old books. In the middle is an office table with papers waiting to be signed. In front of me is Guissep Patriarca. A man with power and wealth, respected and feared by people of the underworld, also known as, The Godfather.

As expected, just standing in front of him takes a lot of courage. The aura he gives off is no ordinary, just like the demon lord itself. His intimidating presence can make a lion shiver and cower before him.

"I'm going to Philippines, Nonno (Grandfather)." I said as I look directly to his eyes surrounded with wrinkles, as blank as possible.

"Why?" The demon asked, as if ready to kill me. Of course, he doesn't wish for me to leave, after all I'm the one to inherit the family business.

"I'm tired of fighting. I want some peaceful life once in a while, you know." I answered nonchalantly and shrugged as I looked at his piercing hazel eyes. It feels like the gaze of a beast.

He smirked as if he knew what is it that bears my mind, like he could read through my lies. He smiled, widely, ready to take my soul.

The wrinkles that show his age and wisdom, tells me that he is a man that cannot be fooled. With his presence alone, he could kill. Is that even possible? Yes, it is. I've seen people shake to their death just being close to him. However, I'm not one of the people who would back down with mere intimidation.

That isn't enough.

I held my head high, looked at him square in the eyes. Just as one of the Patriarca Famiglia code, never ever back down.

"You..." He raised one of his brows. "You just want to run away, because you don't want to inherit the family. Am I correct?" He continued as he looked at me with menacing eyes.

I was caught off guard but didn't show it to him. I gulped as the lump on my throat makes me unable to speak. I smiled, just as he did, telling him I'm not weak. "Wow, Nonno! (Grandfather!) Are you a psychic? You can read my mind, amazing." I said sarcastically, as I look at him faking amused. Then clapped my hands, to piss him off.

His face fell to a frown and a visible aggravation is on his face, making him look like a volcano about to erupt. I felt my whole body about to cower, but luckily I successfully held it back.

"Why don't you want the family business? You always fight anyways. Your name is already carved within this deep underground world." He stood up and smirked. "You've done your share of kills and parties." He said as if to mock me.

My face turned sour. I clenched my fist as I bit my bottom lip. Is he really saying that to me? He, of all people, should know my reason, why I don't want to be inside this hell-hole he made.

"You should know, more than anybody else. The reason why I don't want this shitty business of yours!" I suddenly felt cold, my knees trembled and I could feel the hair on the back of my neck rise. This old geezer, even though with age, he is still the strongest, even breathing is hard if you're this close to him.

"Are you still talking about that nonsense?"
He said unbelievingly.

My nerves twitched. I snapped. Unconsciously, I slammed my hand to his office table. The papers flew by the force and the table made a cracking sound. I almost destroyed the old wood.

But how could he say such things? How could he call it nonsense?

"NONSENSE?!" I shouted. I couldn't believe he really said that. "Fratello (Brother) died, but you didn't even give a shit! You didn't even attend his funeral, you didn't even care, you heartless mother fucker!" I couldn't control my anger and took it all out. I felt my whole-body tremble from fury.

He looked at me, outraged by my sudden burst of attitude. Of course, he always hated it whenever I acted without manners. Nonno (Grandfather) taught me to never curse and to always act like a proper human being, but it's just a part of me. Especially with my mind blank and blood boiling.

I got terrified. I was scared of him but I didn't look away, I glared at him just as he glared at me. I mustn't back down or it means defeat.

The old man let out a long-tired sigh.

"I understand, go to Philippines."
He said in a defeated tone.

I was surprised but at the same time, a little happy and wary. Why would he suddenly change his mind? Did I say something that would make him accept it?

Looking back, I didn't.

"Why are you suddenly accepting it now? And so easily at that."

He took his glass of wine and elegantly sipped, walked nearby the window and stared outside as if there was something more interesting going on there than here.

"There's one condition." Finally, he spoke, something I didn't expect. "Hide your identity, no one is to know that you are my Granddaughter and also the fact that you are the Durga. Luckily, there are just a few people who know who the Durga is, they don't know that my Granddaughter and the Goddess is one." He smiled like a crook.

I know, I just know, he's planning something.

"Why do you want me to hide my identity? What are you planning, Godfather?"
This old fucking sly fox, I know he's up to something. There's just no way in hell, that he would accept something easily. Unless it's something that would benefit the family. That's how cunning this old coot is.

"Stop cursing me in your head my dear Granddaughter, let this be a test. If you do not wish to inherit the family, you will need to forever live in the shadows. Don't expect to live an easy life like a normal person, it will never happen. You do know that, right?"
He stated as if talking to a child.

"You don't have to remind me, I know." I said as I looked down at the floor.

I never wanted a normal life anyway. I'm not stupid enough to believe that I could lead a normal life with my bloodied hands that already took countless lives. I like fighting, heck I love it! I love the adrenaline rush I feel whenever I'm in the middle of life and death. Standing on the edge of a cliff with the Death God behind me. It makes me feel excited more than going to a school field trip. Playing with the Death God is fun, and it will always be.

I just don't want the family.

"Good thing that you know. This is the curse the Patriarca will forever have, not only us but all the people who bear the same darkness. This test will be to see if you would survive without the family." I just looked at him, puzzled. Wondering, what it is that runs through his old cracked brain.

"I don't trust you. You're a man who would do anything for the family's benefit. You would do everything so that, in the end, I would fail this little test of yours." I said as I balled my fist. Uncertain, if I would believe him. He always does this, making games. Even though it pains me, he has never been unfair in games and the rules will always benefit both parties. It's just that, in the end he ends up winning, always.

"Don't worry my dear Granddaughter, its easy. Don't you think it's been a while since we've played games?"
He stated and again sat on his swivel chair like a playful king.

"Indeed, Nonno (Grandfather). I've always hated the games you make, even though its fair, you always find ways to win." I said with hostility lacing my tone.

"Are you not up for it? Scared, are we?"
He said, his voice playful. He should at least try to hide the mischievous smirk. Damn old timer.

"Hmpf! Trying to provoke me, huh?"
I put both of my hands on my hips and smirked. "You don't need to. Was there ever a time I never accepted a game?" I said challenging the old man.

"That is my Granddaughter indeed."
He opened one of his drawers and took out a blue folder. "Now, why don't we settle this place as our battleground?" He threw the folder on his table, gesturing me to take a look at it. Baffled, I opened it.

As I read the inside of the folder, he called one of his men inside the room.

What the...

"Are you bloody serious!? What in the seven hells are you thinking?! This place is..."
I stared at him wide eyes.

"Lindwurm University, pretty good name, right? That school is our battleground, after all, you still need to graduate. I won't have my Granddaughter unable to finish college. After a year if no one was able to know who you really are, then you can do whatever you wish with your life, you will have my blessings."
