Tobio knew his boyfriend wasn't one to be scared. It was part of why he loved Hinata so much. The ball of sunshine was fearless.
At least, that's what he'd always thought.
He hadn't thought much of it at first. But then he started noticing things.
When he'd lift his hand up or turn to fast, or even just picking something up, he'd catch Hinata flinching out of the corner of his eye. It left a strange ache in his chest, and he didn't like it.
The first time he'd noticed it was while they were practicing in the backyard. The two were just messing around while they waited for dinner to be delivered, so they could cuddle and watch movies.
Kageyama wiped his forehead and knelt over, breathing heavy.
"Hey, Sho," he said, turning quickly. "You wanna take-"
He paused, having seen Hinata flinch.
"You okay Sho?" he asked, cocking his head to the side.
"What? Yeah, I'm fine," the ginger said. "What were you asking?"
"Uh..." Kageyama was still trying to understand. "Yeah, um, you wanna take a break?"
"Oh, okay."
He watched Hinata carefully, trying to see if he was hurt in some way. Why would he flinch? Kageyama wasn't going to do anything.
He didn't understand it, but he knew something was wrong.
The second time he really noticed it was when they were at the store. He was helping Hinata with the shopping and going on a date at the same time.
"That isn't the right kind dumbass," Kageyama said, taking the can from Hinata.
Flinch.
He paused. There it was again. He still didn't get it, and it bothered him.
"Wait here, I'll go put it back."
He left, trying to figure out what had happened. The pair had been perfectly happy before, and now Hinata wasn't.
Why does he keep doing that?
He swapped out the cans and went back to Hinata, setting it in the cart before lifting a hand up to ruffle the fluffy ginger curls.
Flinch.
He froze, hand still raised, looking into Hinata's brown eyes.
"Tobio?" the ginger asked, gently moving his hand down. "You okay?"
"Uh, yeah," Kageyama responded. "Sorry. Let's go."
He'd been watching since then, trying to figure out what was making Hinata act like that. And he'd come to an upsetting conclusion by the time the next Pretty Setter Squad brunch came around.
"He flinches every time I turn," he said. "And when I raise my hand sometimes, and sometimes even when I pick something up." Kageyama looked in confusion at the other setters around him. "I mean, I'd never hurt him, so I don't get it."
"Well," Suga said, rubbing the back of his neck. "You did hit him a lot back in high school."
"Yeah," Oikawa chimed in. "I used to see you two fighting all the time."
"Well, yeah but...that was high school!" Kageyama pressed his palms to the table. "He doesn't really think I'd do that once we got together, does he?"
"No," Kenma says, not looking up from his game. All eyes turned to him.
"Really?" Kageyama asked.
"Well, Shoyo doesn't think you'd hurt him. Anymore. But he still tells me about how he was afraid of making you mad sometimes."
With the final puzzle piece clicking into place, Kageyama felt a sharp pain in his chest. Because now he got it. Now he understood.
Hinata was scared of him.
"H-He's...scared, of me?"
"A little, maybe."
Kageyama looked down at his hands, tears pricking the back of his eyes. That was never what he wanted. He would do anything for his ball of sunshine, and he loved Hinata more than anything else.
But if Shoyo's scared of me...
He stood up quickly, pushing back out of his chair.
"Woah, Kageyama," Suga said, standing up with him. "Is everything okay?"
"I...I need to go."
With that, he sprinted out the door and all the way back home.
When Hinata heard the door slam open, he jumped up. Kageyama wasn't supposed to be back for a few hours, so he'd automatically assumed it was a break in.
It wasn't, and Hinata relaxed and gave his boyfriend a smile.
"Hey Tobio!" he said, walking over. "Why are you home so early?"
He caught sight of the stressed look on Kageyama's face and frowned.
"Everything okay?"
Kageyama raised his hand up, and Hinata flinched slightly. The hand continued moving to run through Kageyama's hair, and the heartbroken look in his eyes made Hinata's own heart hurt.
"Why did you flinch Shoyo?" Kageyama asked, in a voice that was both hoarse and heartbreaking.
"What?"
He stepped back as Kageyama closed the door, and the two made their way to the living room.
"Why do you flinch when I do things?" Tobio asked, looking like a sad puppy. "You know I'd never hurt you, right?"
"Of course I do!" Hinata shouted with no hesitation. "I didn't even realize I was doing it!"
He paused again, seeing a tear fall down Tobio's face.
"Then why do you flinch?" he asked. "I know I was mean in high school but I thought I'd changed...have I not gotten any better after that? Why are you scared of me?"
Hinata pulled Kageyama into a hug, burying his face into the blueberry-scented hair.
"I'm sorry," Tobio mumbled. "I'll try to be better. Just please don't be scared of me..."
His voice broke for a minute.
"...I would never hurt you. I swear."
Hinata pulled him closer, letting the taller male cry into his shoulder.
"Don't be scared of me," Tobio said again. "Please."
"I'm not, Tobio I'm not. It's okay, it isn't you."
"Then why-"
"I play volleyball for a living. I'm used to things flying towards me quickly and having to react. Sometimes I do it without thinking when something moves to fast. I promise it isn't you."
Tobio pulled back to look at the shorter male.
"Are you sure?"
"Positive."
Kageyama hugged him again, tightly.
"I love you Sunshine."
"I love you too."
I got this idea after reading a Oneshot where a bunch of ships did a 'flinch in front of your boyfriend' prank thing, and I thought it could be some cute soft Hurt/Comfort.
Hope you enjoyed!
