Señora Perez smiled as I walked off into the sunset. She had acquired me a place elsewhere in some town called Encanto. Sure, it was difficult, anyone who knew the whispers of the place would bring up Alma Madrigal. Alma was who you had to get to allow a person or family to move to Encanto. Now, I wasn't leaving just because I wanted to. My beadwork was selling well, I had money saved up, but the stupid ability I had just always messed everything up.
When I was just a child, I began to walk in the dreams of others. At first I thought I was just dreaming normally, then people began to tell my parents that it was 'so odd' that they saw me in their dreams. The problems started when I got older and I started to affect nightmares. At first I tried to comfort people in their dreams, then suddenly my small town was filled with cruel whispers. My siblings joined in and blamed me for their shortcomings because of lack of sleep. After that, it didn't take long to have my parents turn their backs on me as well. I was sent to my Tia Catalina's home, a town over, only to have it happen again.
Since becoming an adult, it seemed like no matter what I tried, I would be chased out of another town. I just kept making beadwork and having it sold for a split profit with a vendor as I worked the night away doing my craft. My goal was to always sleep while a majority of everyone in the town I stayed in was awake. It worked long enough to create a good relationship with my vendors and get a recommendation for the next town. Then I would leave, never having the time for friends, or even lovers. Not that I would allow myself to have a lover deal with my dream walking. Having skin to skin contact while asleep would definitely mean that I would walk in their dream and their dream only.
Sighing, I followed the walking path towards Encanto. I carried my beadworking supplies and my money, plus the few sets of clothes I owned. Other than that I didn't have any belongings that I couldn't get when I reached Encanto. Slowly I trekked through the mountains, and felt relief when in just a few days I reached a town filled with vibrant life in a valley. The next few days would be uncomfortable as I got used to sleeping during the day once again.
Encanto was well protected and the people seemed very happy. Looking around at the many people, I stood shocked as a woman stormed past with a rain cloud over her head.
"Stupid, stupid Bruno. 'let it rain' he said, 'don't worry about the new person coming into town' he said." The woman muttered. A man dashed after her, his shirt the same color as her dress.
"Mi vida, don't worry about..." The man noticed my staring, "the new person. The new person!" He grabbed her and turned her to look at me. A lightning strike came down from her cloud as her eyes widened.
"Clear skies, clear skies, clear skies!" She said running her hands over the braid that was over her shoulder. The cloud dissipated and she walked over to me. "You must be the beadworker Mama has welcomed into the community. I am Pepa Madrigal, and this is my husband Felix."
"Umm, I'm (y/n) nice to meet you." Casually I held out a hand, trying not to stare at the space where a cloud had formed before.
Pepa took my hand, noticing the bracelet I wore. "Is this your work?" She asked, looking at it in amazement.
"Oh, that, yeah! Actually that is my first work I made when I was fourteen. I've come a long way from that. It just happens to be my favorite."
"I would love to see more of what you do!" Pepa smiled at me, then Felix gave her a look that reminded her of something. "Oh! Mama wanted to invite you to dinner, not today of course, but tomorrow If you can make it. I am sure moving into your new home will take most of your time today."
"Oh, well-" I stuttered out, there goes a whole night of working and readjusting back to my old schedule. "I would be honored, I have heard many good things about Señora Madrigal."
