I was very correct thinking the three days leading up to the wedding would be long. With the dress done and Julieta ensuring that everyone in attendance would have an umbrella, and fixing things for the catering, I had not much to do. I nervously found myself creating a whole new set of beadwork pieces for the kids. With that done I listened to Bruno ramble and act out his telenovelas nervously.
The two of us walked on a tightrope of nerves and desire. We stole glances filled with desire and love, kisses filled with promise, and whispered sweet nothings as we walked around Casita hand in hand. A few times Felix and Agustin stole Bruno away, and I was left talking to Julieta and Pepa.
The kids picked up on our nerves easily. Mirabel nearly didn't leave Bruno's side, and Camilo was clutching my skirts just as much. Dolores kept a quiet watchful eye on us. Isabela kept showing me different colors of flowers, saying she wanted her 'coolest Tia' to have the best flower arrangements. I of course reminded her to just have fun and she nodded, an assortment of varied flowers more colorful than the last bouquet sprouting at her feet. Luisa ran about picking up as many things in town for us from stores. I had to remind her to take it easy several times, but like her sister she wanted it to be a great day for her Tio Bruno and myself.
Waking up the day of the wedding after just sitting with Bruno in his dreams talking about what ifs, we instantly felt nervous. The second he opened his eyes he instantly closed them again.
"Can't see you until the wedding!" He said and threw the blanket over me. I laughed at the superstition.
His hands danced with anxiety as he knocked on every wooden surface he could find before telling me he would see me at the service. I listened to him leave before getting up. I knew that Felix and Agustin would grab him the second he left his room. Julieta and Pepa planned on us going to my house to get me dressed and ready. The kids were going to come with myself and their Madres. I stretched and was about to throw some clothes on when I heard the door open.
Looking over, I saw a blur of movement as Mirabel and Camilo rushed towards me.
"Buenos dias, tia!" They yelled clambering onto the bed with me.
"Buenos dias, mi sobrina y sobrino perfecto!" I said with a laugh. Julieta and Pepa both walked in with a smile.
"Buenos dias!" Pepa said, "Bruno has been taken by Felix and Agustin, so we decided to come up and get you."
"Are we really getting ready at your house?" Camilo asked and I nodded.
"Luisa and me are gonna be the best flower girls!!" Mira said, tackling me to the bed.
"Careful, Mira, she can't be all bruised up on her wedding day." Julieta warned.
"It's alright!" I laughed, "I'll just steal an arepa if I need to." I hugged the kids and they just giggled into the embrace. We giggled for a few minutes, allowing me to bask in the love the kids had for me before shooing them out so I could get changed.
I smiled as I gathered my things. Looking at my pile of wedding jewelry I pulled out the piece I was most nervous about. Bruno's ring. I had worked with a few craftspeople to make it, it was gold with a divot in the center where a thin line of green beadwork sat covered by a protective crystal panel. The beads I had made in secret when I had the vial for Dolores made. Gathering everything and putting it into a bag Mirabel embroidered, I left with Julieta, Pepa and the kids.
Once we got to my house, the real work began. I was rushed up to my workroom where Julieta and Pepa got to see the hard work Mira and I put into the dress.
"My four year old did this?!" Julieta gasped looking over the hourglasses that covered the right bodice and skirt.
"Si, mami!" Mirabel said proudly. "I really like this one!" She pointed to the largest hourglass that sat at knee level on the skirt.
