Who knew children grew so fast. It felt like yesterday I held my hijos in my arms for the first time. Bruno and I truly became wonderful parents in my eyes, and each of the kids had blossomed into their own individuals as they got older. Alba, our sweet little musician received her first guitar at age three from Pepa and Felix. In the nearly two years since then she, myself, and Felix had made progress on new songs and she loved it.
Pedro, who took after his father in most things, stuck to my side like glue. The only times he didn't were when he was with his Abuela or Dolores. When we sat around as a family after dinner and enjoyed stories and music my heart would swell. It was almost like watching a scene from my own life as he carefully watched Dolores do beadwork, leaning heavily on her arm. Occasionally he would sing with Alba, Mirabel and I. His sweet tonality filling everyone with joy as he communicated his feelings through the tone of his voice.
Then there was Lucero, our sweet, quiet Luz. She could be fiercely outspoken at times, especially if one of the kids in town brought up old rumors about her papi. She adored her tias and stuck with Pepa most days, happily playing in the rain. Her favorite thing in the world though, was when Bruno dragged us all to the roof to look at the stars. The first few times we brought them up there I was a nervous wreck, concerned about our children's footing and safety. Bruno then reminded me that neither he, nor Casita would ever let them fall.
The three of them worked in tandem with each other, Alba's loud personality drawing out the best in her hermanos, Pedro's emotional depth and understanding grounding them, and Lucero's mind filled with dreams giving them the extra push to be adventurous. They lived like Bruno and I never could. Kids in town loved them, and they always had a friend over or asked to have an adult come and watch them as they played.
We worried that with their impending fifth cumpleaños approaching, things could change, and we decided to give them a choice. As we did on most clear nights, the five of us climbed onto the roof and looked at the stars.
"Mi amors." I said softly and our three children looked at me, Pedro holding onto my arm. "Your papi and I want to talk to you and get your opinions on something."
They all nodded and looked between Bruno and I. Bruno nodded for me to continue which I did.
"Your cumpleaños is coming up, and we want to know if you want to receive a magical gift. You don't have to, but we want to know if you do." I said gently.
Pedro turned to Alba and Luz, the three of them communicating silently through looks and body language, quite like their papi and tias did. They communicated in silence for a few minutes before Lucero spoke up.
"I want a gift." She said definitively.
"So do I!" Alba's voice carried, as her hermano clutched my arm tighter.
"Milo told me he was really scared when he got his gift mami." He said softly. "But he also said you made him feel better. I think I want a gift, but if it's scary will you help me?"
"Oh, mi vida, of course I will. So will your papi. Having a gift can be hard, and we will help you, all three of you if it's difficult." I said looking at my children.
"Your mami helped me with mine." Bruno said with a smile at our kids. "She wrote up a whole waiver so my gift didn't make me feel bad."
"You helped papi with his gift?" Luz said, eyes wide.
"Si, I did, just like he helped me with mine." I smiled at Bruno. "Just like you three he lets me go into his dreams so I'm safe."
"That's really cool." Alba said as she looked at me in awe.
