Mirabel and Alma announced that the triplets would be born in approximately eight to nine months, going off of when Bruno and I thought we conceived them. The town looked at them and then us with wide eyes.
"Bruno Madrigal and his wife are having triplets?" I heard a few townspeople gossip. Shaking my head I clutched Bruno's arm, leaning against him.
"That should quell the rumors about you for a bit, mi vida." I told him and he laughed.
"You always worry about what my reputation does to me. I'm so grateful to have you." He kissed my temple and I smiled. "But now it's my turn to worry about you. Do you need anything while we're in town? Maybe buy out the fruit vendor if Dolores hasn't already?"
I laughed and shook my head. "I can't think of anything at the moment." I looked at the rest of the family that talked with the townspeople. Enrique offered his congratulations after talking to Dolores. He told me that she was correct, now was the time to enjoy my familia. He also told me he had boxes of my pieces backstocked from my many years of preparing extras just in case.
We all talked to the people in town. None of the other Madrigals let me stray too far from them, everyone including Antonio kept a firm eye on where I was in the crowd. I was very thankful, because I turned to Bruno with a yawn.
"I'm feeling sle-" I didn't finish the sentence as I felt myself being pulled into a dream. Darkness enveloped me, but unlike the dreamless state of a town during the day it was warm. I would daresay it was cozy.
"Hola, mi vida." I said to the darkness. "I am your mami, it is so wonderful to meet you. I hope you are resting well, because," I chuckled. "I can't quite tell. Your dream is rather dark, but I can tell you enjoy the warmth you feel within me. That's you growing before joining your papi and familia in the big bright world." I smiled at the darkness feeling happy tears well up. "You have two siblings with you as well, isn't that exciting?" I spoke to the barely formed consciousness within me. "Perhaps, since you are sleeping I shall sing what my abuela sang to me. She was an amazing woman, your abuela is as well."
I began to sing a lullaby as I stood joyfully within one of my children's minds. It was peaceful, and I tried to be as gentle as possible within the newly formed mind. When I felt the mind begin to awaken I willed myself to open my eyes. I was back in bed, at Casita. Bruno looked at me concerned.
"Are you alright, amor? You were crying there for a bit."
"It was so peaceful!" I said with tears in my eyes. Bruno's eyes widened.
"This is the happiest I've ever seen you with your gift." He said clutching me to him. "What was it like?"
"Warm, comforting, so different from the darkness of the absence of dreams. That's just a vacuum, cold, space, no feeling of another conscious. It was wonderful, Bruno. I sung to them, the lullaby my abuela sang to me." I sniffled happily into his ruana. "I wonder if I could bring you into the dreams. Do you know if pregnancy hormones increased Pepa and Julieta's gifts?"
"I think so, but I'm not sure. Pepa's gift has always been temperamental, and Julie's is unseen so I wouldn't have known either or." He sighed. "Is it bad that I'm thankful my gift won't be affected while you're pregnant?"
"You never have liked your powers Bruno. I'm not upset that you think that. In fact I'm rather happy that you don't have to deal with fluctuating hormones. It would destroy you."
He agreed and we sat in bed. Bruno held me and told stories to our newly forming children until we were called for dinner.
After that first incident everyone carried a bag with a pillow and blanket whenever they were out and about. Isabela, Luisa and Bruno became my steadfast protectors. I hate to admit that they truly helped. Isabela used her vines to catch me, while either Bruno or Luisa carried me back home. The dreams of our children still enveloped in darkness, warmth, and comfort.
