It was our anniversary

When March came around I really got into my plans for the anniversary. I had pulled Mirabel aside along with Felix and Agustin, playing them the song I wrote about and for Bruno. It encompassed everything, my feelings when he left, how I wished he was doing for ten years, how it felt not knowing if we would have children. They all thought it was perfect.

Pepa and I plotted a few things, including getting my old betrothal dress out. It still fit and I was thanking every star in the sky that it did. We sent it out for a few updates, and Selena was over the moon at the notion of Bruno and I renewing our vows.

Things were moving along, and I made sure not to slip up like they did when they were planning my cumpleaños. The work at Casita made it easy. My conversations with planning the event were mainly held there. We had an unspoken agreement to not tell Bruno, and he didn't seem to have caught drift of anything.

The biggest conversation I had to have was going to be the hardest. I had to talk to Alma. During one of our Saturday morning talks I reached out to her and grabbed her hand.

"Alma, can I ask you something?" I said softly.

"Hija, of course you can, what's the matter?" She said softly.

"Our wedding anniversary is coming up." I said glancing at the door, "and I would like to ask you if I can have Bruno's hand in marriage. Officially." I said, the unsure waiver in my voice carried.

"Are you? You're going to ask him to renew your vows, aren't you?" She asked in surprise.

"Yes I am." I said, a bit more sure of my words.

"Yes. You have my blessing, you have for a long time now." She said with a smile. "This is so exciting. Are you wanting another wedding, I can talk to the town-"

"I'll talk to Bruno about that after I propose the idea to him." I said. "I just wanted your blessing, mama." I said, using the endearment that had been used in my head since my cumpleaños. Alma, for all of her flaws had in my mind become the mother I never had.

She caught the endearment and her eyes watered. "Hija?" She asked softly.

"Si, mama?" I used the term again and she gave the biggest smile I had ever seen on her face. She quickly wrapped me in a hug and began to cry.

"You're the madre I've always wanted, I hope I didn't overstep-"

"No, hija, you didn't overstep. I am so honored." She said into my shoulder. "What can I do for your proposal?"

"Bruno needs to be distracted while I get ready and get the rest of the family to the field for the picnic. Could you handle that? Maybe have Mirabel go with you, maybe say you are shopping for our anniversary."

"I will gladly do that." She said wiping tears from her face. "I cannot wait to see what you are going to do for my Brunito."

"He's done so much for me, I want this to be for him." I said with a small smile. She nodded and then got up and walked over to the dresser.

"I have been so worried about wearing this again." She said softly. "But I think," She opened a small box. "I think you just assured me that I can." She pulled something small out of the box and looking in the mirror over the dresser affixed it to her dress. She turned and I gave a watery smile at her as I saw the broach I gave her shimmer in the light.

"I was always so proud of that piece." I said letting a joyful tear roll down my face. "It was the perfect gift for you, mama."

"I have treasured it even when you and I didn't see eye to eye." She admitted. "I don't think I will ever take it off, now that I know that we are on good, stable ground."
