Hiding behind books

Imitating Bruno I said, "Knock, knock, knock, knock on wood!" Tapping around me and finally on my head. The lift started to shoot up. Once I reached the top, I made my way through the main hall, finding his room, I knocked. Getting no response I opened the door to an empty room. Looking around I sat in his chair and smiled as I picked up a book from the top of the stack on the side table.

I got a bit distracted by the books, only looking up when I heard a shocked yelp. Looking up to see Bruno in a towel, face extremely red in embarrassment, I hid my face behind the book I held. The small second I had seen was burned into my brain. The water in his hair pulled down his wild curls, his frame was slight, and he seemed more soft than muscled. His stomach had a little pudge that had to be from the delicious food Julieta made. Below the hem of the towel his legs were defined and toned from walking the stairs often.

"Shit, I'm so sorry. I knocked and you weren't in here, so I just figured." I knew my face was just as red behind the pages of the book. Thoughts betrayed me as I thought about what I just saw. "I can go!"

"No, no!" He said. "Just keep the book up and I'll grab my clothes and change in my vision cave."

Keeping the book over my eyes, I could feel the unspoken anxiety we both felt in the air. I heard him shuffling and I wanted to peek, but I reminded myself to keep his trust, you have to do that to have friends. I didn't even lower the book when I heard the door close.

A few minutes later I heard the door open, and Bruno shuffled over to me. Placing a finger on top of the book and lowering it, he gave a sheepish smile. His hair hung lower than normal with the weight of water, and his eyes were taking in my expression of embarrassment.

"Sorry." I said again, lowering the book down to my lap. My eyes looked down at the book.

"You came for a visit!" He said with his sheepish smile becoming a full fledged grin.

"Yeah." I said my face was still burning up. "I promised."

I couldn't believe how I was acting. I was a grown woman, in a man's room, who was not a blushing teenager. Clearing my throat I looked at him. His face was blushed as well.

"Sorry for not letting you know I was coming." I said.

"You, uh, surprised me. Not in a bad way, just surprised." He laughed, "I wish my gift gave me forewarning."

"It's ok, I feel like I intruded."

"It's a welcome intrusion, except for your timing." He laughed. "I'm so embarrassed!" He sat on the ottoman in front of me.

"This is your personal space, I shouldn't have barged in." I looked around and saw a rat scurry up to his shoulder.

"Let's say that since you have an open door policy, that I do as well. I still have to find something embarrassing about you to tell mi familia."

"Tell Julieta I saw you practically naked. She can then have Pepa kill me so she can bring me back to life. Multiple times."

"Where would you get the idea that my hermanas would do that?"

"Julieta threatened me."

"Oh no, the whole 'older sister' cliché?" He asked with a smile. I nodded, "She's only thirty minutes older."

"She's protective for sure." I said with a smile, "I also talked to your Madre, Brunito." I grinned as he gawked at me.

"She did not-"

"Well, she did. But I also talked to her about the townspeople." I said seriously.

Bruno looked surprised and furrowed his brow. "You talked to mi mama about rumors regarding me?"
