Alma avoided both Bruno and myself for several weeks. Even at dinner she refused to spare us a glance. I was rather worried for my husband, as I assumed that prior to me meeting him, he was rather close to his madre. One night my worries were confirmed. We were sitting in our room, when Bruno looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"Amor, do you think mi madre hates me?" He asked. I quickly drew him into my chest, trying to rid him of the low self esteem through my touch.
"It was just an argument, mi vida, she's just stubborn. It's where you get that from, I'm sure." I reassured him.
"I saw her talking to Pepa and Julieta. She hasn't talked to me since-"
"I know," I said as he grasped onto me. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry that me being here has put a strain on your relationship with your madre."
He wrapped his arms around me and looked up, his green eyes expressing no regret, only sadness. "I need you here. When I found you I thought she would be happy. You help me, you do what Agustin and Felix do for mi hermanas."
"Bruno," I sighed. "I may have a little theory on why she is so harsh on you, if you want to hear it." I said thinking back to the portrait of Pedro Madrigal in the stairwell.
"What is your theory?" He asked, his expressive eyes analyzing me.
"You look so much like your padre, and I know she lost him. I think she has twisted that when she sees you. But she needs to realize you are Bruno, not Pedro." I said with a sigh. "I just hate seeing what I've done to the family you love so much."
"You love this family." He said softly. I smiled sadly at him and moved curls out of his eyes.
"So do you, and I understand why you are frustrated and sad." I said kissing his forehead. He squeezed his arms around me and looked up again.
"I think I'm going to talk to her. No arguing, just talk." He said releasing me.
"I know I shouldn't go with you, but I want to make sure you're alright." I said softly.
"Can," he sighed. "Can I take your scarf with me? Just as a comfort?" He asked.
"Of course, amor, you're more than welcome to it." I said. He nodded, getting up. Going to our wardrobe he gently took my scarf and wrapped it around his neck. Putting his hood up he looked at me.
"Maybe you should go sit with Dolores in case it doesn't go well and she gets worried again?" He said extending a hand nervously.
"Of course, I'd never say no to hanging out with my sobrina." I said. Taking his hand I got up and ran my fingers through his hair beneath his ruana. He leaned into the touch.
"Just remember that your happiness is just as important as hers."
"So is yours." He said looking at me, the sadness still in his eyes. "Our happiness."
"Our happiness, mi vida." I nodded and we left his tower solemnly. His anxieties plagued him as we entered the main area of the second floor. His hands wrung themselves and he glanced around nervously.
I took both of his hands in mine, stopping the repetitive motions. "Breathe." I whispered.
He took a deep breath, puffing out his cheeks and looked at me. Giggling a bit at his actions I released his hands as he let out the breath. He motioned for me to go and see how Dolores was, and turned towards his mother's door. I cautiously walked to Dolores' room glancing behind me as Bruno walked slowly to Alma's. He glanced back at me and nodded. He and I knocked on the respective doors simultaneously, Dolores opening her door first, seeing her Tio Bruno at her Abuela's door she let out an anxious hum.
