My day was ended like any other that had occurred since Bruno left. I gathered my things to walk around town, gather more supplies, check in on my nieces and nephews, and avoided my husband's siblings and mother. The only difference is that the day in question was Antonio's gift ceremony. In the morning sun, I quickly gathered my things from town. I smiled softly at Mirabel who sang about her familia. She reminded me so much of Bruno, and it caused me to wonder if he was like her as a teenager. Blissfully unaware of what was going on around them.
I hummed along to the song and Mirabel came up behind me, children in tow.
"My Tia (Y/n), She sees into your dreams and makes sure you sleep well!" She sang as she tried to escape the kids who were asking her about her gift.
I chuckled at my sweet sobrina and watched as she continued to run. I glanced over at the mural, where once upon a time I stood next to Bruno. Shaking the feeling of guilt and grief I made my way back home. My only purpose was to avoid the townspeople who were abuzz about the new gift, hoping this celebration wouldn't end like Mirabel's. In the moments I heard bits of whispers like that I wanted to scream that she was perfect, that she didn't need a gift, that the Madrigals didn't care that she didn't get a gift. Yet, I knew all but the last thought was true. The people that didn't care about her not receiving a gift were myself and Bruno. And Bruno was gone.
Opening the door to my home, I shook my head as I saw Antonio curled in the same spot I had found his Tio Bruno in many years before.
"Tonito?" I asked, setting down my basket.
"Tia, what if I don't get a gift? I'm scared." He said and I knelt down next to him.
"Then you will still be perfect the way you are." I pulled him close to me. "Do you know that little bottle of beads Dolores carries around with her?"
"Si."
"None of those beads are perfect, they wouldn't lie flat on my beadwork. Now, normally I'd make a necklace that highlights those imperfections, but your sister loves the sound of beads against each other." I kissed his forehead. "Which is because no one, or thing is perfect. But there are always those who love the imperfections. If you don't get a gift then you don't get a gift." I shrugged. "I don't care either or. All I care about is that I love you for you, Tonito."
"I don't want to be treated the way Mira or you are." He admitted clutching onto me.
"Oh, Tonito." I said with a sigh. "I'm sure everything will work out fine, and I'm sure Mira would say the same thing."
"I want you there." He sniffled. "I want you to be there in case I don't get my gift."
"You know I can't, Tonito. But I can be outside if that will help, and if everything goes wrong, which it won't, you can run out to me and I'll make sure you are protected."
"Promise?"
"I promise." I tickled his side. "Now do you want what I made you?"
"You made me something?!" He gasped.
"Of course!" I smiled down at him lovingly. "Now let me go get it and then you should get back to Casita. Ok?"
"Ok tia."
I walked upstairs and grabbed a bracelet that looked like a feather that I had made specifically for Antonio. Once I had reached the bottom of the stairs I smiled at him with my hands behind my back. "Now close your eyes, and hold out your hand."
He did as I told him to do. I wrapped delicate beadwork around his wrist and told him to open his eyes.
"Feliz Cumpleaños, Tonito."
